The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just finished watching one of the most powerful films I've seen in years!
The Act of Killing: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2375605/combined
It revolves around old Indonesian gangsters reliving, and reenacting, their brutal mass killings they partook in during the mid 1960s. It's also a very dark and scary commentary on modern Indonesian politics and government. One of the most powerful and hard to watch documentaries I've ever watched. HIGHLY recommended, but be warned this is NOT and easy film to watch! Having said that it's ironically a very deeply, darkly, humorous film too. This will stay in my mind for a long time!
For someone who loves South East Asia and who lived there a year as a child this was a particularly interesting and difficult film to watch. I lived in Malaysia, right next door to Indonesia, the culture and flavour of the place comes right back to me when I watch much of this film. Malaysia too has it's issues and dark history, this film made me feel quite conflicted, since as I said I love that part of the world.
If you are wondering about my camping trip I'm going to be posting about that later.

(6,154 posts)To give you an idea there is one scene where a guy pretends to interrogate a woman (played by one of the other gangsters in a kitschy cross dresser) with her baby. The baby is, in this case a teddy bear. The guy ends up bludgeoning and tearing the teddy bear apart in front of its "mother". They take great pride in what they have done and for most of the film see nothing wrong with the horrendous acts they partook in. Strangely though one of the gangsters starts to realize the horror of what he has done through the course of reenacting things.
