Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsLet's talk laptops....
I want to post this here in the Lounge since more folks are here every day.
Sadly my laptop is wearing out. It's 5 years old and I can't even c&p anymore since I've worn the left click button out, amongst other issues.
Soooooooo......I'm laptop shopping.
So I have some guestions...
1. What brand do you have?
2. What Operating system does it have?
3. How much memory?
4. How old is yours? How's it holding up?
5. What do you like about it?
6. What sucks about it?
Any tips, comments and advice would be welcomed. TIA.

My DH needs excel for his accounts........and I need word for my work stuff. I also want photo storage and good documents storage. .....but I think for the most part we're just normal users. Nothing fancy.

(149,640 posts)2. Windows 7 (I very much wanted to avoid Win 8, so I bought this online where Win 7 was easily available.)
3. Memory: 450 GB.
4. Several months; It's holding up very well.
5. It has several features in common with my old Lenovo from 2007 or so, and this is part of why I wanted the same brand. Also, my computer guy recommended this brand.
6. Being new, it's very sensitive to how I strike the keys.
It's a Lenovo ThinkPad L530, in case you want the precise name.
I very much recommend it.
Good Luck!

(38,002 posts)New or used. No, they're not shiny pretty. They're tough, reliable workhorses.
Personally, I buy used machines. I've had this refurbished T60 (released 2006) for a year and it's still going strong. I got it for less than $100, slapped a 500GB hard drive in it, installed Windows 7 and it works like a charm.
I have a 560X (released in 1997) that works as well as it did the day I got it (used) in 2001.

(10,406 posts)I've been researching, reading reviews and browsing Amazon and I think I've narrowed it down between a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E535 and a Toshiba Satillite Professional C850. Both with Windows 7, both with 4GB and both 15.6 inch.

(38,002 posts)See that red button on the keyboard?
That is why I will never, ever, ever use another laptop. That my friend, is the Thinkpad Trackpoint, better known as an eraser mouse. Once you go eraser mouse, trackpads suck.

(38,002 posts)Just put your finger on it and give it a wiggle. With it, you can move the cursor to a desired place and then use the left/right buttons just below the keyboard to left-click/right-click. The Trackpoint, in combination with the left-right buttons, takes the place of trackpads and plugin mouses. You can even download software from the Lenovo site to disable the trackpad so it won't get in the way of your wrist when you use the eraser mouse.
People either love or hate the red button. I love it. I find it much more intuitive to use it as my pointing device than a mouse and I despise trackpads.

(6,907 posts)Last march I got a I-5, 4 gigs ram, 500 gig slow hard drive, 14" screen, blue ray burner, usb 3.0, for $301.22. It was still windows 7 and they had switched over to windows 8, so it was on clearance. I wiped the hard drive and put Kubuntu on it. It just works great. It is a little on the hefty side. If money was no object I'd get a lighter one with an SSD drive. I was going to put an
SSD drive on this one but it hasn't bugged me enough to bother.
If you don't want to spring for the SSD, then pay some attention to the speed of the HD as well as the size (7200 is better than 5400).
Here's one thing you should know. There is a new version of intel chips called Haswell coming out right now. So you may start seeing the current generation of laptops drop in price. Be careful that you aren't paying a premium price for an Ivy Bridge processor which is on the way out. If you get a good deal on an Ivy Bridge great. If it is the same price get the Haswell because it is better on battery life. It may not be easy to tell. They may call Ivy Bridge "3rd generation" and Haswell "4th generation." There is also Sandy Bridge "2nd generation" still around out there. Another difference is that if the laptop is using the integrated intel graphics - if it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card - then the later the generation the more advanced the integrated graphics.
If you are putting some money in, look for IRIS graphics, matte 1080p display. For good money economy come down from there.
Its a personal issue, but I'd stay away from windows 8. That's just an opinion.

Got my vote!
I think Windows 8 is a spawn of Vista . . .

That's why I searched for a new 'puter with Windows 7.
And I'm happy I did so.

(1,805 posts)and love it. The only thing I dislike is that Apple doesn't put CD drives in any of their computers anymore.
I also love the financing (with no interest) that Amazon offers with their store card. I didn't buy mine that way, but I did for my daughter. Even if money isn't a concern why not use other people's money and earn interest (such as it is these days) on your own.

(3,709 posts)1. What brand do you have?
Toshiba Satellite
2. What Operating system does it have?
Windows 8...so far, I don't hate it, just find it aggravating, but use the desktop most of the time.
3. How much memory?
6 GB
4. How old is yours? How's it holding up?
1 week, so far so good
5. What do you like about it?
Powerful, fast, only weighs 5.3 lbs. I play a lot with Photoshop and it runs the program without any issues. I bought the
laptop at Office Depot. It was on sale and I got a really terrific deal...that was really nice. Office Depot has been running
really good specials lately.
6. What sucks about it?
So far, nothing really. Windows 8 is different but I haven't had any real issues with it. I do use the desktop. Don't like
photos are accessed, just may be I'm not familiar enough with how to use it yet.
Love this laptop.
