College Football Tailgate Thread

So far 1 Alabama, 7 Lousiville, Florida State, and Texas Tech picked up blowout victories. Clemson & Gerogia have 2+ TD leads in their games. Georgia Tech is tied w/ Miami in the 3rd. Michigan w/ a TD lead over Minnesota and Oklahoma State by 3 in the 3rd with Kansas State. My #2 team Colorado State is hosting San Jose State so they're likely to get back to .500 as long as they play smart. My upset special pick is Northwestern over Ohio State.

Good afternoon, what games do you plan on following and what teams are you rooting for? My team is in Dallas to play Notre Dame.

Other notable top 25 match-ups include
2 Oregon @ Colorado
4 Ohio State @ 16 Northwestern
15 Washington @ Stanford
10 LSU @ Mississippi State
TCU @ 11 Oklahoma
West Virginia @ 17 Baylor
Arkansas @ 18 Florida
22 Arizona State vs Notre Dame **Cowboys Stadium**
24 Ole Miss @ Auburn

referring to SEC defenses. Now that they have pro-quality QBs, defenses are getting shredded. Something that the Big 12 has had to deal with in the recent past with QBs such as Tannehill, Griffin, Gabbert, etc.

I've been a critic of Big 12 SEC defenses in the past but I never looked it at from that POV. At any rate, Oklahoma is #6 in defensive YPPA -- http://www.cfbstats.com/2013/leader/national/team/defense/split01/category02/sort04.html

#1 in pass defense but #122 in pass offense. I never seen team passing stats on extreme ends like that before.

4. It's nearly time for ASU vs. Notre Dame

I'm not that familiar with this years Notre Dame team, so I can't really judge our chances to beat them. I just hope that last week's offense shows up and that our defense holds, especially against the run. ASU also continues to have some issues in the red zone; not sure why they insist on putting in Eubank. And I'd also like to see Deantre Lewis get more snaps, he seems like the biggest threat speed-wise.

Apparently no team has ever managed to beat USC and ND in back-to-back games (there have been about a dozen instances of this), so maybe ASU will make a bit of history.

so I think it's fair to judge their stats, #28 in defensive YPPA at 6.1 per throw allowed. Offensively they are #68 throwing at 7.1. Above average defense and average offense is what Notre Dame appears to have.

Arizona State is #81 defensively allowing 7.6 YPA while their offense is #33 at 8.1. So it looks the game is going to come down to the battle between ASU's offense and Notre Dame's defense. As far as pass defense goes. I don't look at running stats since they're so hard to read. Even YPC can be misleading because of goal-line and short-yardage situations.

I heard about that stat earlier. I do hope they win, they need to move up in the rankings.

7. The sportcasters have already mentioned twice

that ASU is terrible at tackling. And we really are. Seems like ND is gonna run at us a lot, which makes perfect sense, since it''s our major weakness. The passes so far have been short, but ND's receivers were open. So it seems like the key is gonna by our D.

And say what you want about ASU's flame helmets (they look better in game than they did in the publicity shots), but those ND uniforms are about as ugly as they get.

I will always prefer the Sparky helmet but some of the uniforms aren't bad. The maroon jersey and mustard helmet combination isn't bad. I actually like the white helmets a lot.

I don't think I will get used to the black or the two-toned numbers. Black can be a cool color on uniforms if done right which ASU doesn't. Not as bad as the Arizona Cardinals black jerseys. I actually prefer the '98-'05 Cardinals uniforms to the current set.

11. I miss Sparky too.

I don't like that he has completely disappeared from the uniforms. One thing they could do is instead of having that ugly "ASU" writing on the shoulders, put Sparky there, if you're not gonna have him on the helmets. I agree on the fading numbers, they just look like they color is progressively washing out. Should be solid gold. I disagree on one thing though: the only piece of white kit our team should have is jerseys, they should burn all the other whites.

But ND? Whoever thought those shades of gold and green were a good idea should get their eyes examined...

but then again, I've never been a fan of Notre Dame's uniforms. I like helmets that at-least have a logo. Also don't like that shade of gold.

The defense is getting torched, both on the run and on the pass. It's good we were able to hold them to field goals on the last two drives, but we needed a stop after the offense got us back in the game. Now let's see if the offense can come out and answer...

My feed was skipping out on me but did ASU go for it on 4th & long w/ 3 timeouts? This happened at about the 3 minute mark.

And Kelly threw and INT.

In case you missed the rest: We then stopped them and they punted and the return guy let it bounce and it ended up on our 1 yard line (Wouldn't be an ASU game without the horrible special teams play). On the first play out of the endzone Kelly throws a pick 6. We then marched down the field to score a touchdown but couldn't recover the onside kick. Game over.

Te defense was brutal. Terrible tackling, pass rush was neutralized by the ND OLine and the secondary was vulnerable.

The offense could still have won the game, but they never really found a rhythm. We have good running backs, but no runing game. We desperately need some strong OLine recruits to get the run going and get some pressure off Kelly. And we need to shore up the defense.

We could still have a solid season if we play well from now on, but we need to upgrade in a few areas if we want to stay competitive in the long run.

Certainly doing their part to show the Big 12 isn't made up of soft defenses.

I wondered if you were still around. Nice seeing you. The Saturday college football thread is probably my favorite DU tradition (along with the NCAA & NFL picks in the Sports forum).

I hope it continues to attract support.
