20 minutes ago, I put my long hair into a pony tail on top of my head and SNIP

cut off 18 inches and then more and more. I'm way too broke to go to a hair salon and I was so sick of it.

I feel brave and it doesn't look half bad.

I'm shocked by how good it looks, but granted, I have very thick wavy hair so it's "forgiving".

I did that a few years ago and I was surprised how much more lighter my hair was! I mean it makes sense but you just get so used to it, it really stood out.

How long had you been growing your hair??

middle of my back or longer. got a friend to trim it every couple of months but every time I asked her to chop it off, she demurred.

I was surprised that it really isn't all that difficult to give myself a decent haircut. Then again, nowadays I just let it grow and braid it when the weather is warm. I didn't look bad with short hair, but I didn't quite look like myself either - in fact I looked alarming like my sister.

I have been hacking at mine one to two inches a week. It's a few below my shoulders now and looks really bad. I am going to do it your way. Whack off the tail from the top.

and every now and then, i practice this money save. although, nothing takes the place of a good hairstylist/cut about once a year. helps me keep the shape even. for some reason, even when i do the ponytail cut - it seems to always be about an inch longer on my left side. i have curly hair too - and you are right - it is very forgiving. enjoy your new look & free lightness , cali

Hi,
Wow, that is quite a lot. Have you disposed of it yet? I believe there is an organization that makes wigs for kids/people with cancer from real hair, just an FYI.

Peace

They accept hair that's been cut, bound in a ponytail , that's at least 10 inches to make wigs for children undergoing chemo.

Yours would definitely qualify! You feel good about cutting it when you can donate it too (I know you already do but this may be icing on the cake).

Brush your hair over the back of your head. cut straight acoss about eye level....sharp scissors needed.

It will be not all that bad of a.layered cut.

Not the best. But not awful.

I developed a system. I always wore my hair somewhat short. When I felt the need to get rid of some of the length, I would cut it myself. This was back when we used to roll our hair up in curlers at night. I would take a section of hair, run it between my fingers until nearly the end, and snip the rest off. One curler at a time. The result wasn't too bad. Now that I'm older, I need all the help I can get and sometimes even that isn't enough.
