Need DU opinion regarding "donation" stalking by private school.

I get this snail mail request for money from a private school I attended and was expelled from almost 40 years ago. I don't feel that bad about getting expelled from this school.

I've read that in the U.S. it's considered okay to ask anyone for money. Nevertheless, as a matter of principal, I'm considering my options:

  1. Ignore it,

  2. Write back to them with every grievance I have of them, and ask for justification for a donation under these particular circumstances,

  3. Write back the them and demand they never send me anything ever again.

Maybe there are other options I haven't considered.

It really bothers me that they even know my current address, hearing from them is kind of like being stalked, given the expulsion. It's creepy as hell.

Waste of energy and material to send you crap, and it only gives you stress.

Make it stop!

If this is really bugging you, write them politely explaining that it is impossible for you to ever donate because you were expelled. Then you can ignore them with a clear conscience if they send you anything else.

just send them a note saying that you wish to be removed from all their mailing lists and database.

No explanation needed, no drama. Just a simple opt-out letter. That's usually all it takes. We want to mail people who don't want to hear from us and are never going to donate just about as they want us to mail them. (So, not at all.) We figure if you change your mind, you'll let us know.

Alternately, if they keep mailing you, you can do what my stepdad did and tell them you're dead...that had the added bonus of showing up to his 25th reunion and finding a "gone too early" shrine for him complete with shitty over-blown-up yearbook photo, flowers and a memorial book "to be forwarded to the family."

It doesn't make sense that since the school has access to the records of their students that the donation requests would be sent to anyone expelled. That should be an automatic opt out.

I'm guessing it's a money saving technique, perhaps less time consuming to blast to all names on some quick and dirty internal list, and that cross correlating that list to academic or disciplinary records for automatic opt out makes it more difficult, though with computers, it could be as easy as pressing a button or two.

I don't think I'm buying the idea that they didn't want to mail their former expelled students. It sure would be nice if corporations would GET A HEART!

This.

No, actually we don't have access to academic records...you're in the system, same as if you transferred or decided to drop out or could no longer afford the tuition; even expelled, it wouldn't make a difference in terms of being listed if we did have access to the records...because even those people donate sometimes.

The only people that don't get mailed are the people that ask not to be mailed.

I, as a development coordinator, when I was a development coordinator, have no need to know why you left the school or what grade you got in 10th grade chemistry...so most schools' privacy policies don't entitle me to access that information.

Likewise, I know all sorts of things about our parents and alumni (where they work, how much money they make, how much they give to charity, are they married, do they have kids, are their kids coming up on an age where they would be a legacy potential student, are they related to any current students, did they recently come into a large sum of money, what types of causes do they give money to, what political candidates have they given money to leads me to know their politics, ...I know a lot) that the academic staff has no need of knowing and are likewise not allowed to access under the privacy policy of the school. The terminal on my desk with the database on it has a password...and the principal doesn't have that password (HR and the President of the Board of Directors does) because she's not permitted to know what I know. It's none of her business.

I guarantee you if they don't remove you after the first one, they will after the second. It is perfectly within your right to refuse anything delivered to you.
