NEW FLY TOWN (AP) -- Millions of common house flies swarmed to celebrations around the garbage dumps of New Fly Town on Friday in honor of a once-in-a-generation milestone for the dump's ruling House of Diptera: after a 33-day reign, Queen Insectica MMXIV abdicated in favor of her eldest maggot son out of 562 off-spring, Musca Domesticus.

At four days, King Musca Domesticus is the youngest monarch in Dumperia and the first Muscidae king in 23 weeks, since Musca Domesticus CMLXXXII died at the business end of rolled up Chicago Tribune. Like Insectica before him, Musca Domesticus has assumed the throne at a time of social strains and economic malaise.

Although the New Fly Town monarchy is largely ceremonial, he immediately staked out a course to preserve its relevance in the 21st century.

"I want to establish ties, make connections and exemplify what unites us, the Fly people," the freshly minted king said at a nationally televised investiture ceremony in New Fly Town's 60-week-old Cathedral of the Holy Arthropoda, held before the combined houses of Fly parliament.

"As king, I can strengthen the bond of mutual trust between the flies and their government, maintain our democracy and serve the public interest."

Hopes for the new monarch are buzzingly high.
