Is it just me or

is there something inherently satisfying about opening the coop and watching the birds flood around your feet as they race to their morning food then going in to the coop to retrieve the morning's eggs to prepare alongside pancakes and fried ham steaks?

It just seems -- I dunno -- "proper."

3. Were you raised in it?

Not the coop, the farming life. I'm noticing that people who find some peace or relaxation or zen or satisfaction in it generally weren't raised in it.

I was, spending large parts of my childhood summers out in the sticks where we had to pick vegetables, process everything by hand and raise small dairy animals (sheep, goats, some poultry. Not enough land for cows.) and get up with the sun...and I hated it. I hate the idea of it now even. I can't find any joy in it...but if it works for you, enjoy the heck out of it.

I was so happy to never have to do it again. I know where my food comes from, but I'd rather pay someone else to actually raise it, especially if they like the work.

I still enjoy my modern conveniences. I guess the grass really is always greener on the other side.

We spent the last two days building a new fancy coop for the little flock. I think we spent more time laughing at their antics than working. And in the last little batch I bought I ended up with a Silkie rooster. I can't bring myself to get rid of him. yet

9. We have a few chickens and a pair of pygmy goats as pets for my SIL (she's 9) when she stays over.

Sometimes it's nice to just sit in the on the nice grass and watch them go about their little lives. I can't help but laugh when the goats skip and prance.
