Squirrels are actually very kind to each other and will adopt abandoned baby squirrels if they notice a relative has not come back for them.

(11,795 posts)I mean, I love all animals. But I really do love the little creatures. I think they are so sweet. We put food out for them in our yard.

... for a backyard. I noticed a squirrel with a really ratty crooked tail would sit on my
windowsill and check me out. I started leaving honey roasted peanuts on the sill,
eventually leaving the window open and leaving a pile of peanuts on the inside sill.
.
I arranged boxes and tables between the window and where I usually sat on the end
of the couch studying. It took a while, but that squirrel eventually relaxed and ate its
way closer and closer along a trail of peanuts until it would eat the pile right next to
my shoulder -- even hanging out for awhile when he/she was done. I would sing softly
to him/her when that happened.
.
I truly believed we enjoyed each other's company.

And the peanuts.

(54,256 posts)Five baby squirrels adopted me last year.
I think their nest had been destroyed by a storm.
They wandered in to my patio, one at a time.
I fed them peanuts and they'd sit on my shoulders.
Cute as hell.
And then I found they were covered in fleas.

(16,954 posts)After Halloween one year, as I was walking to my car, I saw that this squirrel in the area had gotten ahold of some Halloween candy, in particular a Butterfinger. Oh my goodness, talk about a crazed animal attack on that candy bar! Screeching, spastic movements to the mouth, body flopping, just pure insanity. Sugar is addictive to every living thing.
