A linguist / etymologist / english professor / teacher was discussing the concept of the double negative in various languages.

"In English a double negative is a positive. Not so in all languages, such as Russian."

"But in no language is a double positive a negative."

A skeptical student on the back row raised his / her hand / eyebrow / whatever and replied,

"Yeah . . . Right!"

The other night I hear Trent Lott on NPR talking about after the 94 shutdown the Republicans came back with a really "positive" program. Immediately thought of the above joke that my daughter - an English major - told me.
