80s music gets a bad rap, but it wasn't all kitsch and keytars.

John Zorn's insane arrangement of Morricone's "The Big Gundown":

Rhys Chatham blends minimalism with rock:

A middle-aged jazz keyboardist and experimental bassist/producer somehow ended up recording one of the most iconic pop hits of the mid-80s, and brought hip-hop culture to suburbia.

David Byrne and Brian Eno bring the funk with the help of some ranting preacher:

King Crimson goes New Wave, but somehow makes it work:

Even some awesome classical music (John Adam's "Short Ride in a Fast Machine&quot

Post some more awesome 80s music!

was instrumental in ushering in a new appreciation for contemporary Blues. SRV had had a pretty good career as a sideman up to that point in a few different genres, but Texas Flood was his first solo effort, and established him as a Blues titan.

Can only dream of what he would have continued to put out if he had not been taken so early. RIP Stevie.

He was a champion of traditionalist blues at a time when it was pretty uncool to most people, and when a lot of the 60s-70s bands that cut their teeth on the blues were desperately trying to reinvent themselves away from that sound. And was so incredibly talented that he made the blues cool again.

Been a fan of hers for a long time.

That Latin brass band sounded pretty great too. I hadn't heard of them before, so thanks!

Not to mention the Replacements, R.E.M., Dinosaur Jr, Gun Club, Big Black, Black Flag, Bad Brains, Butthole Surfers, Cramps, and that's just the American bands. From Britain you had the Smiths, New Order, Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo and the Bunnymen, House of Love, Sisters of Mercy, and the list just goes on...

not that I knew at the time - I was an MTV kid in the mid 80s, and then by the late 80s, I mostly stopped listening to new stuff and was really into classic rock and classical music. But I caught up on a lot of that stuff a couple years later.

My brother, who wasn't even born until 1980, loves Husker Du.

Specifically, KPFT-Pacifica, and KTRU (Rice University.) I never would have been exposed to even a tenth of the genres of music I listen to now. Although soma fm does come close to filling my needs in music listening pleasure

Now that's gonna be stuck in my head the rest of the day. Thanks a lot!

The Hooters "Satellite", a great send up of televangelism in the 80's

The Tube "She's a Beauty"

Asia "Heat of the Moment", one of the best guitar intros and my current favorite karaoke song.

GTR "When the Heart Rules the Mind"

(the late) Benjamin Orr "Too Hot to Stop"

Bruce Springsteen "Atlantic City"
