to make a film about the 47 Ronin. It's a popular legend in Japan, and not well-known here. But it's got everything American film audiences like: Honor, sacrifice, violence, revenge, mythic heroism, etc.

An American-made film would be a boon to Asian-American actors who, I think, are underrepresented in American film in any but character roles.

We tend to view Asian, and specifically Japanese culture through Western eyes ('Shogun', 'The Last Samurai'). And we could use a film in which the Asian characters speak for themselves, without a Western 'liaison'.

There has also been some controversy about 'generic Asians' in specific film roles (Chinese actors playing Japanese characters in 'Memoirs Of A Geisha' for example), but there's a lot of opportunity to make a great film here.
