Let me be specific: people don't want flying cars. They want a flying car, which belongs to them.
I mean, we've all seen people drive, right? We don't actually want to see that enacted in three dimensions several hundred feet above the ground.

(3,020 posts)When the evening was over, the horse would head directly home without my grandfather lifting the reins, even pulling into the barn next to its stall. The downside was, he had to look at a horse's ass all the way back. Progress.

(60,335 posts)Enough of this bullshit sitting in traffic or not being able to get out of my driveway.
They are replacing the street in front of my house, we are supposed to have access to our drives most of the time. Fine, I understand that there will be times that we cannot get in. But yesterday, they dug up our driveway without telling us and we hadn't left for work!
Flying car would have taken care of that, lift up and drive right over their ugly little heads.

I would suspect that catastrophic failures would be handled by multiple levels of redundancy and safety systems (such as parachutes, and/or flotation/landing balloons.)
And even as I may seem like a skipping mp3 to some, we could avoid so many current transit problems if we'd just switch to telecommuting for office jobs.

I'm all about Google's self-driving car though. As someone who will never be permitted to have a driver's license, it will change my life.
