I ordered some baby chicks and they are supposed to arrive at my post office tomorrow - all OK and according to plan. BUT the post office in Tucson just called and said they are there now and I could come get them if I want or wait until tomorrow as per the schedule.
I wish they wouldn't have done that. I know they are there from the tracking and I know they will be ok until they get here but having somebody call and say I could go get them is going to bug me all day. I don't have a reliable enough vehicle to go that far just for this and frankly the gas would pay for half a bag of feed. ARRGGGHHHH

Hopefully you can get busy with something else that will drive these thoughts out of your head...
Then the day will pass quickly!
Hang in there...

(55,012 posts)I wasn't expecting them until tomorrow. I knew they would be sitting in their little box for two days, I just didn't need somebody calling up to say if you want them a day early, hop into your POS truck and drive 60 miles to come get them.
Like Peggy says - I need to get busy doing something else and get my mind off it.

(2,682 posts)Could you please enlighten this city girl --- you mean that baby chicks, actual living beings, can be sent through the post office? Who's feeding them, who's giving them water? Do we need to be concerned about PETA here?

(6,581 posts)They don't require food or water to speak of for the first 48 hours. They are still absorbing the last of the egg yolk through the navel and umbilical cord, and that provides a built-in reserve of nutrients and fluids. Some hatcheries do now put in gel-packs of a nutrient/fluid gel for them to peck at, but not all.

(2,682 posts)I had visions of the poor little things parched and starving sitting in the back of a post office somewhere. It's an unusual way to move them, but now that I think about it, I don't know of any other way. Good luck to them.

(6,581 posts)Several million are shipped every year in the US by the USPS.
Package bees are more fun than poultry. Nothing like having the post office call you at 4:30 in the morning and plead with you to come pick up your bees because they damaged the shipping cage and bees are flying loose.

(55,012 posts)two years ago I ordered the same plus a box of 25 straight-run mixed banties. skunks got most of them (of course after a couple hundred dollars of feed into them)
all I have left of those are 4 majorca banties - 3 roosters and one hen, and one standard barred rock hen. plus I have some kind of all black standard hen of a a pair of them I got from a neighbor. I would prefer to get adults but they are hard to come by for any price. I have so much trouble getting them from that "teen" fully feathered stage to actually laying. coyotes, skunks or damn dogs always get them. doesn't matter what time of year I start either
the one to one rooster to hen doesn't work too well

(55,012 posts)because I didn't have to post it there first!
well I guess I can try sending again if they don't send something by tomorrow - or I can try a different site altogether!
