New Milestone Emerges: Babys First iPhone App
As adults turn, increasingly, to mobile devices like tablets, Kindles, and iPhones, their children even the smallest ones are doing so as well, according to a new study, Zero to Eight: Childrens Media Use in America, 2013 by Common Sense Media, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that examines childrens use of technology, and rates childrens apps, games and Web sites.
The study is based on a nationally representative Internet survey of 1,463 parents with children under 8.
Over the last two years, the shift has been drastic. Among children under 2, the survey found, 38 percent had used mobile devices like iPhones, tablets, or Kindles the same share as children 8 and under who had used such technology in a similar survey two years ago.

(3,065 posts)I have a 4 year old nephew who can navigate Youtube like nobody's business. He gets on the Ipad and watches video's of Mario Brothers video games and has found reviews (yes, reviews) of toys like Hot Wheels, Lego's, and Playdoh given by a five year old and shows Uncle Crazy all the toys that he likes and the ones he doesn't; ones that have too many pieces or characters to put together or are not age appropriate. He learned the alphabet on the Ipad and his numbers too. The kid is amazing. I can't figure out how he finds them.
The technology is here now. Reject it or embrace it, but it's going to be a big part of his world.

(131,063 posts)Many thought TV would be bad, and look how Sesame Street has helped kids learn to read (letters/numbers,) and encouraged their curiosity. I have NO PROBLEM with 'toys,' vehicles that take advantage of children's native curiosity, and indeed, applaud them, and HOPE our children's teachers will do the same.

(50,562 posts)I don't know what they do because you must be 18 to get cleared and NSA classifies everything including toilet paper.

(8,747 posts)A co-worker has niece / nephew - 3 year old twins. Due to their use of computers and iPads, both of them are doing reading and math at 1st grade level. And they are playing and winning computer / iPad games at a 10 year old's level.
My co- worker is educated, smart and computer literate, and even he says it's scary how fast kids can learn with an iPad.
