I was having this conversation with a friend and we disagree personally he feels he made star trek relevant again. While I believe he ruined star trek by turning it into another modern action flick just set in space.

(51,122 posts)He pretty much discarded the spiritual socialism of the Star Trek universe.
I admit I enjoyed both films, but as action films, not Star Trek mythos.
She saw the first one and refused to see the second.

you couldn't beat The Next Generation.
It covered damn near everything. The movies coming out should shift into gear with those story lines, but who am I kidding?

(53,965 posts)Most movies, especially sci-fi, are going to be more action packed in order to keep audiences happy. Given that a new mythology has been created, I can see new series being launched on TV that will have more of the original flair, but under the new mythos. My only problem is there are still no gays! Pigs in space? YUP! Jews in space? Oh yeah! Gays? What's a gay?

(53,965 posts)Even in this day and age, most of the time, we are still treated as an "issue" rather than an actual human. Last week, the OK paper's TV guide insert had a picture of the cast of "Modern Family"; guess who was missing? Granted a few shows can be OK with it, but most of the time, it seems we are still relegated to "After school special" status. Hell, some people lose their fucking minds when it is even suggested that newly written mythos should include making lead characters gay (search LBN for "Spiderman gay" and "Dr. Who gay", it will be quite eye-opening.

Behind the Aegis
(53,965 posts)I fell it plays into the real life situations on the web in regards to the characters and the slash fiction created around them. In no way would I say it is "queer baiting." In all honesty, I can't even see it. I'd be interested to know why she thinks this. They have handled GLBT issues in funny ways, so I guess that might be it, but there are many more shows which are worse given we aren't even mentioned, and if we are, it is as I said earlier, it is a "special" episode. Even "Glee" kind of goes back and forth sometimes between normalcy and "special."

(2,670 posts)She felt that they created a special dynamic between castiel and Dean that pointed to them having feelings for each other. I personally never watched glee so I don't know much about the characters in it.

(53,965 posts)We love it! The actors know they have a huge gay male following. Quite frankly, I think it shows the complex nature of friendship among men, including the possibility of the development of sexual attraction. There is LOTS of slash fan fiction on-line about it. As for "Glee," they introduced a transgender student and have actually done well with the character.

(2,670 posts)So maybe I'll get the point of what she was saying about the writers doing that when I catch up. As far as Glee I congratulate them for introducing a transgendered character. It's funny as a kid I always questioned how it was normal to live in a world where people just broke out into song and dance. Now I'm older and interestingly enough I find myself doing it alot especially when cooking.

(53,965 posts)There are lots of "glances" and clever innuendos. My partner and I just giggle. I love watching interviews with them because they clown around and they know what the audience thinks, so it makes it funnier to me.

(12,132 posts)I think he blows up too much stuff in every movie. And I love blowing stuff up. But I love Star Trek so much I sadly take whatever I can get in most any form. Abrams Trek doesn't feel very Trekkie but it's trekkier than no Trek.

(5,352 posts)It wasn't distracting the first time I saw the first one in the theater, but when I re-watched it at home the lens flare stood out like a sore thumb. (He did the same thing in Super 8, which kept me from liking it as much as I otherwise might have.)
