The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI am sitting in front of my wood burning stove, making a pot of soup on the top of it.
It does work, takes all day.
I love the smell and the sound of the wood burning.
Today is prefect for it, cold and wet.
Later some cornbread and ice tea.
I must have ice tea, it is Texas.
Everyone say safe and dry.

(10,109 posts)That sounds nice and toasty. I have a friend who has a real nice wood burning stove from Germany, that sucker radiates heat like a mofo!
Peace

(18,705 posts)I don't have a fresh killed chicken but everything else is the same.
This stove also make a mean stew.
It is the slow cooking.
My stove will open up like a fire place, or close the door like a regular wood burning stove.
I like watching the fire better then watching tv.
Takes me back to the farm when I was little.

(6,795 posts)We had a cabin in Prescott, AZ. No central heat or air. We'd all sleep in front of the fireplace...burning the wood that we "stole" from the neighbors. My family once cooked an entire Thanksgiving meal in that cabin....2 burner stove, a small oven, fresh turkey from the farm, not too many pots and pans, no microwave...BEST THANKSGIVING EVAH!
I'm in No Cal now. It rained the last 2 days. I have been freezing. But still am drinking my iced tea. Just put another log on the fire.
Have a good one!

(18,705 posts)My Grandmother cooked on a wood burning stove until after WW2.
I have been in a cabin with a wood burning stove, that was some great food.
I will be frying my turkey like every year.
I have all my stuff ready to go.
This cold weather makes the holiday for me.
Have a great day and stay warm.

(6,795 posts)He has the turkey and I get the other 15 side dishes...doesn't seem fair....hmmm...and I am meeting the parents for the first time....I can cook like the devil, but am still nervous....
You're right...the cold weather does make it seem like the holidays. But my family is in Arizona and I am missing the crap outta them right now.

(18,705 posts)I miss my Grandparents who passed away years ago.
I try to keep their memory alive by cooking on the stove.
This time of year makes you think of family.
Have a great Thanksgiving.
That better be one good turkey.
Have a good one.

(18,705 posts)The taste is different.
My Grandparents didn't like the tv on during the day.
On cold days it would so quiet in the house, except for the wind, the clock and the stove.
My job was to keep the wood box filled, not a easy job.
My Grandparents like a warm room.
After coming in from chores that fire felt so good.
That is why I bought a wood burning stove.
Also my Grandmother was a great cook.
She would make bread and other goodies in the winter.
The smell is still in my brain.

(24,146 posts)it's cold today and i think it would be a nice way to warm up. we've got blt fixings, so that would be dinner.

(18,705 posts)So it has to be cornbread.
Bread baking smells so good.

(24,146 posts)there is something so comforting about homemade bread.
texanwitch
(18,705 posts)With the bread machine just throw all the stuff in.
My Grandmother would have words to say about that.
I could make bread like my Grandmother if I had to but it is a lot of work.
I need to make the cornbread soon.
I need to make extra for the dressing.

(54,256 posts)It was a big house. 2 story.
Loved making a pot of chili on the stove.
Later went to a coal stove with a blower, which was much better.
Finally got an oil furnace.

(18,705 posts)My Grandmother would make chili sometimes.
I have lots of wood.
woo me with science
(32,139 posts)I love posts like this.
It sounds lovely. Love the idea of the smell of burning wood as much as the soup.
Thank you.

(18,705 posts)I had a great childhood while it lasted.
It ended at 13 so I guess that is why I remember it so much.

(32,139 posts)I'm still having mine.
texanwitch
(18,705 posts)I wouldn't change any of it.
The memories are still there.
The person I am today is because those early years.
I still have some of my Grandparents things.
Days like this remind of the simple days.
I understand my Grandparents better now.

(23,272 posts)I haven't tried to cook anything on it ever.
I use the crockpot or my kitchen stove. Sounds like a new project!
Cheers and hope your soup turned out perfectly!
texanwitch
(18,705 posts)I use my Grandmother's old cooking pot.
I guess it depends on the kind of stove.
Make sure the pot has a thick bottom to it.
Stir from time to time.
