Shrewd or despicable?

There was a class I once took that was taught by a lawyer. I don't know how the conversation got started, but life was so calculated for her that she would marry if there was a financial incentive to do it, and would divorce for the same reason. Apparently, she was dating an old gent that was just as cold. Every decision hinged on the monetary advantage. Including walking away from mortgages.

I seem to be surrounded by a lot of people who think the same way. Always looking for the edge, which in a community that does not get punished for breaches of fiduciary responsibility can cross over to infringements on your rights and property.

Perhaps it's Shrewd AND despicable?
