(68,918 posts)I guess it's because my husband "won" our daughter over simply by spending time with her--watching Jungle Book, going out and doing stuff just the three of us... that sort of thing.

(149,627 posts)Somehow, I feel that the guy in the commercial isn't buying the little girl's love by giving her this gift. To me, he's including her in the new group that the 3 of them make.

Nothing wrong with a gift, as long as it's a token of the love you feel for someone (adult or child) and not the only expression of that love.

(4,851 posts)The day my daughter was born I bought her a pair of diamond earrings. They were hardly big, but they were nice looking. They cost about $200, which was a lot of money for me. I still have not given them to her, she is now 8. She chose to get her ears pierced about a year ago and I thinking of giving them to her then, but after talking to my wife I decided to wait until her next birthday. Maybe someone would choose to take their daughter to a play or buy her a computer. But really, who cares how one decides to do these things. The fact that I choose to do it with small diamond earrings, does that somehow make me a bad person? I hope not.
Kay and all businesses try to sell their products. I am okay with that as well.

(68,918 posts)I reserve the right to my opinion, just as you have yours. We could not afford to lavish our child with diamonds, brand new cars, etc. Somehow I managed to win her over from birth and my husband from the time she was 2.

(4,851 posts)as I am sure the many test audiences displayed before they aired it. I suspect there are people who would hate just about any jewelry commercial. but I do not find it creepy in the least. I think a parent buying a present for a daughter is wonderful. It does not matter what it is. If all a person can afford is a box of crayons and a coloring book, it can be a beautiful gift. If a person can afford a diamond, it can be just as beautiful a gift as a box of crayons. The monetary value of a gift should not matter. Rich parents are allowed to love their kids too, and buy them what they can afford to give them. My parents managed to win me and my three siblings over from birth despite being dirt poor and barely able to feed us. We loved the no frills holiday dinners and the hand-me-downs as much as the kids who got brand new computer game systems loved their gifts. Mostly this is because I learned as a poor child on government assistance that the value of a gift means nothing, its all about the love and the admiration that the gift represents. My favorite gift I ever got from my dad was a stuffed elephant I still have in my bedroom and now I am a 40+ year old man with two of my own kids. I bet it cost $2.00 back in the early 1970s, but to a little kid it was awesome. I hope my daughter feels about her earrings the way I felt about the elephant. Who cares if the elephant cost two bucks and the earrings cost 200 bucks. The cash value means nothing, but the "love value" means everything. I find it silly to hate something merely because it has monetary value. If you give your children gifts that cost one dollar or one thousand dollars, its the love that matters. Pleanty of bad people give out $1 gifts and plenty of great people give out $1000 gifts. Monetary value means nothing. I am glad that you did a great job raising your kids, but I hope that all kids grow up knowing that you don;t judge a gift by what it is worth. A gift of jewelry can be just as wonderful as a candle. Its not about what it cost, but the love that it represents.
