Okay, I'm just gonna come out and say it...I didn't care for Steely Dan's "Aja" at all.

Too smooth, too superficial, too pop. Sounds like smooth jazz boys trading inside jokes. Which also sums up most of their previous work, but those songs had teeth. I am a big Dan Fan, but my interest pretty much ended with "The Royal Scam." Thought "Gaucho" was even worse. Don't know much about their new post-reunion material but hated "Cousin Dupree" from "Two Against Nature."

When I first heard them in my teens in the 70s, I thought they were okay, not special really. Took me a long time to realize just how GOOD they really were. Nobody else was doing what they did at the time, and nobody else has done it as well. Yeah, I might agree that, post-Aja, their work wasn't as good, but all in all, they have stood the test of time amazingly well. They blended rock and jazz in ways that no one else has been able to imitate successfully, and that gives them a unique place in music history.

I can appreciate their skills and listen to them in a general way, but I am not really a fan and never got into them.
