Believe it or not, that picture of Morgan Freeman is not a photo – it’s a finger painting. UK-based artist Kyle Lambert finger-paints (or finger-draws, if you’re a purist) extraordinarily photo-realistic portraits of famous Hollywood stars on his iPad.

Lambert, who is a trained oil painter and illustrator, uses an iPad Air with the Procreate application. This Morgan Freeman portrait was drawn based on a photograph, but the video proves that Lambert recreated it entirely through his own artistic talent. Although the brief time-lapse makes it look like a breeze, it actually took Lambert more than 200 hours and 285,000 brush strokes to complete.

This is an incredible app. Mind you, I'm not going to produce any Morgan Freeman type art, but this is extremely versatile.

I had previously purchased Paper52, which is very limited in the types of strokes you can use. Not so with Procreate. If you draw, sketch, paint and want to do it on an iPad, this is the app for you.

But I paint and make dolls, painting and baking in layers, and am constantly trying for the most realism possible. Watching him add the texture and light here bit by bit is very helpful! It does seem like a fantastic app.

... and it's just astonishing to me.

It doesn't matter what the medium is. It could be a ball point pen and a yellow pad at a boring meeting and they create art.

My own doodles are always those of someone you'd move away from if they were sitting next to you on the bus. It's always best if I'm just reading, napping, or staring out the window.
