Long time ago, Reagan was president.
I forget. Wasn't nearly as cool though as talking about chicken parts with Lauren Bacall at the Gristedes in Amagansette.
Long time ago, but damn was she ever gorgeous!

I just posted about how damn it cool it was to find that they'd arranged my clothes and filled my ice bucket.

PS, it's my one indulgence, for good causes, two years ago at this event I got to meet and chat with Bill Ayers, and I love that!

I was thinking about it today, how sad it the history, and pointless, but that's enough of that, no good can come from it I tell ya!
Go ahead, ban me again!
BainsBane
(53,032 posts)PM me your FB and I'll invite you. As for the banning, I'm happy to confer with the other hosts about lifting it. You would just need to post about the aspects of gun control you do support while you're in there. It's not the place to argue why gun control is a bad idea.

(26,117 posts)The Simeone Chorale version is what we had as an LP when I was growing up, so it's the default winner, imo.
Christmas music is a major thing for me - I have dozens of Xmas music albums and listen to it all day long, starting right after Thanksgiving. So, I will probably have several additional replies to your OP, as I think of more essentials to add.

(54,770 posts)It's Christmas time in Washington
The Democrats rehearsed
Gettin' into gear for four more years
Things not gettin' worse
The Republicans drink whiskey neat
And thanked their lucky stars
They said, "He cannot seek another term
They'll be no more FDR's"
And I sat home in Tennessee
Just staring at the screen
With an uneasy feeling in my chest
I'm wonderin' what it means
So come back Woody Guthrie
Now, come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help you out
Come back Woody Guthrie
To us now
I followed in your footsteps once
Back in my travelin' days
Somewhere I failed to find your trail
Now I'm stumblin' through the haze
But there's killers on the highway now
And a man can't get around
So I sold my soul for wheels that roll
Now I'm stuck here in this town
Now come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
And tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help you out
Come back Woody Guthrie
To us now
There's foxes in the hen house
Cows out in the corn
The unions have been busted
Their proud red banners torn
To listen to the radio
You'd think that all was well
But you and me and Cisco know
It's going straight to hell
So come back, Emma Goldman
Rise up, old Joe Hill
The barricades are goin' up
They cannot break our will
Come back to us, Malcolm X
And Martin Luther King
We're marching into Selma
As the bells of freedom ring
So come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help you out
Come back Woody Guthrie
To us now

Trivia note from your resident classical music encyclopedia:
The instrumental thing between verses is the "Troika" movement from the Lieutenant Kije Orchestral Suite by Sergei Prokofief, who died in 1953.
A troika is a sleigh pulled by three horses.

(21,046 posts)I have a soft spot for jazz/rock people who have classical chops, since that's what I started on as a child. Piano lessons at age five, violin lessons starting at age ten. I was not quite big enough for a full sized fiddle when I was ten, and they are only 14 inches long!! I'm not a very big girl so my hands are the right size for fiddling.
And the critics at Rolling Stone think if you have the chops to play classical competently, then you're "pretentious". I think they're jealous.
I give ELP credit for playing Moussorgsky. Back in high school orchestra we played The Great Gate of Kiev. So the critics don't like ELP, Yes, Blind Faith, Asia, Rick Wakeman, King Crimson and all those guys in art rock. Tough.
People who get bored with classical music tend to go into jazz because those are the only two complex forms of music. Jean-Luc Ponty got the Grand Prix as outstanding student at the Paris Conservatory in violin, so he went into fusion. He made albums with Stephane Grappelli and Frank Zappa.
"No one has ever put up a statue to a critic." --Jean Sibelius, famous composer who wrote "Finlandia" and some damn good symphonies.

(56,912 posts)I just never got Rush ...
I took piano lessons as a child and music runs in the Family ...
My Mom and I sang in the local church choir and local choral society ... that type of thing.
Aunt sang in some local Dallas Opera. Brother plays Bass in a Jazz Trio (also Bluegrass )
My musical tastes run the gamut ... I love classical but, am not knowledgeable and I really appreciate your threads because of all the info.
Merry Christmas, Manifestor_of_Light

(21,046 posts)Yeah, I'm old!!
I love to turn people on to good music of any kind. I say "You need to hear this, it's good stuff!". Did this to my hubby, played tapes in my car, he's a crazy guitarist/math guy, and he didn't run off from my music appreciation class.
I got all the musical talent in the immediate family. Was an orchestra nerd, had season tickets to the symphony and the opera in Houston. So I learned most of this stuff by playing it. I have some cousins on mom's side that are pretty talented.
I have sung in a lot of church choirs and directed a few and played the piano for church. I like the UUs because you can play secular music if it fits the theme of the service. Sacred and secular are artificial distinctions to me.
I love masses in Latin and that sort of thing. Anything by Anonymous Four, Chanticleer or The Tallis Scholars.
If it's good stuff that makes you feel better, then I'd call it sacred.
I auditioned for the HGO chorus back in 2005. My audition no. is Cherubino's fast number from Marriage of Figaro "Non so piu cosa son, cosa faccio".
A lot of what I know about literary works I know second-hand from opera or ballet suites. I don't like seeing the ballet. It just doesn't turn me on. It is very artificial and I don't understand it.
I've played lots of ballet suite music and that is fun. The Firebird, Rite of Spring, probably all the Tchaikovsky ones, Carmen, Rodeo, Les Sylphides, blah de blah.
Brother plays bass in a jazz trio? That's cool. Quote from Sting: It's not a chord until the bass player says it is.
I have a Fender jazz bass tuned in fifths, CGDA, like a cello. I can't think in fourths like guitar players. That should blow your brother's mind. I can read bass clef, being a pianist.
I don't like country, hiphop or rap. Country is whiny and negative, and I refuse to listen to that stuff. Most pop stuff now is crap too.
I gave up on rock when I saw the Police on the Synchronicity Tour in the summer of '83 and they were really getting good, and they broke up after that.
My first rock concert was the Righteous Brothers in '64!!
Only art rock band I saw back in the 70s was King Crimson. They were the middle act in a line up of Robin Trower of Procul Harum, King Crimson and headliners Ten Years After with Alvin Lee -- can you believe that line up??? That was in '74 and King Crimson had a violinist which impressed me.
As far as jazz, I like some of Pat Metheny's stuff: We Live Here, Secret Story and movie soundtrack A Map Of The World. He stole his licks from Wes Montgomery. Clean guitar like Pat just isn't fashionable. Steal from the Best!!!! I also like Chick Corea, Lyle Mays and Gary Burton.
Lately I've been getting into Queen's lesser known stuff. Got a copy of Greatest Hits II. Such wonderful positive stuff. Brian May(my avatar) is tasteful with the distortion. He should be president of the Studly Physicists Society.
And you have a very Merry Christmas too, Tuesday!!! In Your Wildest Dreams, and in reality too!!

(56,912 posts)funny, I get my love for classical through ballet. Studied it for many years and was a member of a local amateur company. Wanted to dance for Balanchine (yes, I am that old, too)
but, I get this: It is very artificial and I don't understand it. --- Really, I do. I don't see it that way but, I studied it and I understand the concept of how hard it is to make the artificial look natural and effortless. When that happens, SUCCESS.
Love a lot of Broadway Show Tunes, too.
I happen to likes -some- country but, I have to be in the -mood- for it which, is rarer and rarer these days.
Like a lot of blues and alternative stuff. Some gospel and soul.
Used to really love Good Pop Music from the sixties ... bubblegum, I think they called it. Hey, I was a kid. target market.

(49,445 posts)Dashing through the snow,
In my rusty Chevrolet,
Down the road I go,
Sliding all the way;
I need new piston rings,
I need some new snow tires,
My car is held together by a piece of chicken wire!
<chorus>
Oh, rust and smoke, the heater's broke,
The door just blew away;
I light a match to see the dash
And then I start to pray... hey!
The frame is bent, the muffler went,
The radio, it's okay,
Oh what fun it is to drive this rusty Chevrolet!
I went to the IGA,
to get some Christmas cheer,
I just passed up my left front tire
And it's getting hard to steer;
Skidding down the highway,
Right past the Negaunee cops;
I had to drag my swampers to get the car to stop!
<chorus>
Bouncing through the snow drifts,
In a big blue cloud of smoke;
People laugh as I drive by,
I wonder what's the joke?
I got to get to ShopKo,
To pick up the layaway;
Cause Santa Clause is coming soon in his big old rusty sleigh!
<chorus>
