Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHe was a good dog.
I'm a pretty private person when it comes to my personal life, so I don't often share stuff like this. But I know some of you might be interested in knowing that Romeo, our chihuahua, passed away early this morning. He was about 15 years old, which is a good run for a dog. He had definitely slowed down quite a bit in the last year, and he was on three different medications for his heart -- so this didn't exactly come as a surprise. We'll miss him. He was a good dog.
Here are a few pictures that I found sitting on the DU servers. You may remember seeing some of them.

and, I swear, her little girl yip became a big girl bark..
Some times I think they shiver because their engine is always revving up to save the day

After a month or so, I couldn't take the empty place anymore.
I found another Pom --Shrimpy, who you see in my pic. I didn't bond immediately, which was just fine. But she is now also my baby and my heart, like Weeny was.
It was the most healing thing I could do for myself. And funny thing---she is very fussy with food.

(2,674 posts)So sorry for your loss, it is so sad to lose a loyal old dog. It so happened that we had to have our Britney spaniel put down Monday morning. He was old for a bird dog, a little over 17 years. He had not hunted in a long time, although he still liked to point squirrels in the back yard. He had dementia and was almost blind. I think he had a stroke Friday night, he'd come to my bed, probably to get me and just fell down and started thrashing around. He could not stand up and he wouldn't eat or drink water even when we carried it to him. You could tell that the end had come and we got him into the vet early Monday so he would not suffer. He was a such a smart dog and real beauty. He was the best looking Britney we ever owned and we have had quite a few over the years.

I hope you can take joy and comfort in knowing what a beautiful thing you did, giving this animal a safe, loving home for so many years.

(3,825 posts)I remember reading how a family with a six year old were trying to explain why dogs die sooner than we do, and this young child summed it up perfectly. People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?
The six-year-old continued, Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they dont have to stay as long.
So sorry for the loss of your friend.

(30,947 posts)I know the pain that you are feeling. I have a 4-year-old Chihuahua. My son gave her to me as a Mother's Day gift when she was 6 weeks old. She doesn't remember her real mommy, and I am the only mommy she knows. She loves me, but does not like strangers.
I had to have my almost 13-year-old Rottweiler sent to doggy heaven in 2010. That was the hardest and most heartbreaking thing I have ever had to do. But she had liver and bone cancer and could no longer walk.
My Chihuahua has many more years of life as they do outlive the larger dogs. But I dread the day when I have to send her to doggy heaven.

Thinking of you....grief sucks, it truly does. I hate it.
But it's natural and part of life; feel it to its very depths and cry whenever the wave hits. That is the natural healing process.
Reminding myself of that has always been a lifeline to hang onto when I've had to swim in the ocean of suffering.

My little Chi is going on 13 years old, and by the way, looks just like Romeo, and is starting to have leg problems, have been to the vet and they assure me that she is not in any pain and at this time, just take it as it comes. Although, she was on Prednisone a few weeks ago, and, boy, she thought she could fly and was buzzing around like a new born puppy <G>. (135,425 posts)One of the shitty things about pets is that they die before we do. It's never easy. I have a collection of ashes stashed in a drawer --- my pals from days gone by. I suppose I should scatter them, but I just never seem to get around to it. And every time I say I'm going to take a break from being bound to animals, some little fart shows up that needs a home. I'm down to two dogs and a bird, now.
If you're up for it, I'll bet you'll find a little barker who will help you with the grieving process at your local shelter.
It sometimes takes a while, though.

So very sorry to learn of the news but I'm sure that pup was blessed to have you as its parent and no doubt lived a good long life to prove it. Losses like that can be one of the hardest things but hopefully time will help heal and the memories of the good times will shine through -- as an old female poet responded when asked 'aren't you afraid to die?' (3,387 posts)That last pic - Those little ones really think they're BIG DOGS.
I'm sure your memories of Romeo will warm your hearts and bring you joy. You and your family will miss him like crazy - I know I still miss my fur-babies that have crossed the rainbow bridge, and I'm just as sure that he knew you gave him one heck of a good life, and you meant the world to him. That's the thing about having a best friend (dog) forever.

(34,655 posts)And I recall you have a little son who may be old enough to have a broken heart over this. I'm so sorry for the sadness.
But, Bless you for giving the cute little critter a happy life.
Take care.

(34,582 posts)pets are like family that don't seem to live long enough, hence my reluctance to have any. My sister has a chihuahua, and he loves to prance around with his forelegs locked. It is hard to explain, but it looks like he is dancing and I laugh my butt off whenever I see him do it.

(1,408 posts)Romeo looks like such a cutie.
I love the heart on his head and those soulful eyes are precious.
And quite the guard dog.
Losing a furmily member is hard but it looks and sounds like he was loved very much and Romeo, you and your family are lucky to have had each other.
Take care.

(15,164 posts)You were fortunate to have him as a pet and he was very fortunate to have you and your family as owners. I remember seeing pictures of him from informal get togethers you had with other DU'ers throughout the years. I am sure that you enriched his life greatly through your presence and vice versa
May Romeo rest in peace and deepest thoughts and condolences to you and your family

(4,359 posts)Sorry to hear about your dog friend. We lost ours on New Year's Eve a few years ago and we still miss her. So I know nothing I type will really make you feel better... but our best wishes to you and your family.
Kitten therapy is quite good for heartbreak, by the way. I prescribe one soft fluffy kitten or puppy, hug and kiss it regularly. You'll feel better.

(4,465 posts)Romeo was a doll, I'm so sorry, Skinner. My childhood dog was a little cocker spaniel and lived to be 14. It was quite the adjustment when she died, it took a long time to get over the "everydayness" of her in my life. They're worth it and then some but boy is it hard to say goodbye to them, especially when they have been a part of your life for that long.
My heart goes out to you and you family.
