Beautifully done show about an amazing man. It's hard to pick out favorite segments, but: (I) the version of "Send In The Clowns" rendered by multiple artists; (II) Sondheim's concise explanation of how he learned the basics of song writing in one afternoon from his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein; and (III) the stunning finale, incorporating Sondheim's words and image with the conclusion of "Sunday In The Park With George" are going to stay with me for a long time. Can't recommend this one highly enough to those of you who love musical theater and/or those of you who are teachers. Enjoy.....

Next time I see it scheduled, I'm going to record it.

Love Sondheim. A few years ago PBS ran a birthday tribute that was held at Lincoln Center. It was so good I bought the DVD.
Looking forward to watching it.

Lots of interviews with him, from different eras---the 50's, 70's, etc. But he remains remarkably consistent, throughout the years. A natural teacher and an incredible talent.
It's shows like this Sondheim tribute that get me so agitated about those snotty "I haven't owned a TV in 5 years, so I'm better than you" threads that turn up every once in a while on DU. Yes, the overwhelming portion of television programming is the same old "Vast Wasteland" described decades ago. But then along comes a show like this one and it evens things out.....

At the end of the show, performers from every musical on Broadway that was playing at the time came out and sang "Sunday" from "Sunday in the Park with George." It came as a complete surprise to Sondheim, and it was stunning and very poignant. (I love that song, as well.)
Oh...and Elaine Stritch sang, too...love that woman.
