Garrison Brothers is my current favorite every day drinker. Right now it's only available in Texas. It's a bit pricey, but nowhere near the top end for whiskeys.

Maker's Mark offers good bang for the buck, but I stopped drinking it after they started watering it down. Unless you are drinking it straight I doubt anyone would notice the difference. I think it still offers excellent quality at the price point. Weller's 12 year is also a great value. Both of these are wheated whiskeys, which I generally prefer when it comes to younger whiskeys. If you want something even cheaper, Buffalo Trace bourbon is pretty good, especially if you're making cocktails. If you want the best, try George T. Stagg if you can find it, but it's not for the faint of heart nor is it easy on the wallet.

Order some Blenheim online if you don't live where it is available in stores.

Blenheim is a ginger ale from South Carolina. The company began brewing the ginger ale in 1903. It comes in capped bottles and is available in not as hot and hot varieties. I prefer the hot. Man, is it ever good!

Check out the website:
http://www.blenheimgingerale.com/

We are fortunate to be able to purchase singles and six packs of our beloved Blenheim in several liquor stores here in town.

A number of years ago, a townie resident on a road trip discovered Blenheim on a trip to SC and brought some back here. The word spread and local bars and clubs started serving it after inventing the glorious Maker's Mark & Blenheim cocktail. Local liquor stores started carrying the ginger ale also. I just like to drink the hot ginger ale straight up and neat! No bourbon needed!

Cheers!

Happy New Year!

used to be my fav, but, because of taking meds for BP, cholesterol, etc, I've found that alcohol thins my blood way too much, if I get even the slightest cut or scrape, I bleed for hours and hours, so I refrain nowadays.

I have a full bottle of Old Crow that's been sitting for 2 years now, never opened, too bad it's still not in the barrel aging more, it would be worth something in years to come, due to aging.

I've always preferred bourbon.

Shackleton’s whisky deemed delicious

CHICAGO — Few of us would want to relive Ernest Shackleton’s arduous and ultimately unsuccessful trek to the South Pole 103 years ago. But a Glasgow distillery is betting that a whole lot of people will want to sip the Scotch that Shackleton had with him on his Antarctic adventure.

Three crates of the explorer’s whisky spent a century forgotten and frozen to the rock underneath the hut he used as a staging ground for his attempt at the pole. Once they were discovered, it took another four years of strategizing before the crates could be safely removed, a sojourn in New Zealand where the bottles were thawed under precise laboratory conditions, a private jet ride back to Scotland, and eight weeks of exacting analysis, but the moment has arrived: Shackleton’s Antarctic whisky has been recreated and is ready for mere mortals to drink.

Whyte & Mackay, the company that now owns the distillery that made Shackleton’s spirit, announced this week that it had tasted the original blend, deemed it delicious and created “an exact replica.”

...

Whisky writer Dave Broom verified that the new spirit tastes exactly like the original, according to Whyte & Mackay’s statement. Paterson and Broom are the only two people in the world to have sipped both drinks.

And there is the cooking option

But whisky is increasingly venturing out of the drinks cabinet and into the kitchen. The spirit is the alcoholic equivalent of salt – it brings out the flavor of the sea in seafood, the smokiness of smoked food, and the sweetness in a dessert. This is all down to its peculiar chemistry, says Rachel Barrie, master blender for Bowmore Distilleries.

"Whisky has an incredibly diverse flavour spectrum, much more so than wine," she says. "The flavours of a single malt Scotch whisky, for example, are derived from malted barley fermentation, the distillation process and maturation in oak casks over several years, which makes it ideal to boost a wide variety of flavours in foods."

For Scotch whiskey it's Macallan 12 year or Aberlour 12

Irish whiskey: Jameson or Bushmills

I used to drink bourbon but after switching to Scotch it tastes too sweet somehow, but it is distinctive and I'll take it if offered.

Crown Royal I don't care for. Too bland and watery ( I guess in some circles that means "drinkable" ) but I won't turn it down if it's offered to me.

Take advantage of promotions. In fact, I got a really nice Macallan whiskey glass gratis that came with a bottle of 12 y/o I bought once.

Cheers. And do let me know what the cherry oak 18 year is like.

used to insist he would only drink crown royal… My sister and I would save the empty bottles and fill them with the cheapest whiskey we could buy and let him rave on about how much better Crown Royal tasted than all the other brands you could buy. To this day he has no idea we did this. He also insisted you should not foul the taste of Crown Royal with pop or soda….
He took his whiskey neat or on the rocks….
