There is a feral male cat I've been feeding; he has been spending his time under my neighbor's shed (very low to the ground).
I have put towels and a fleece blanket under there, and have been putting food - wet and dry - out regularly.
He was OK through the last freeze, but I know he's not at his optimum health.
Recently he hasn't eaten as much (the last 2-3 days) and tonight I shone a light under the shed; he's under there too far from my reach, he didn't run away, and he didn't eat any of the moist food I put under there for him -- I checked after an hour.
His eyes are runny.
I was hoping to keep him fed for another few weeks, and then catch him in my humane trap so he could be examined, neutered, given shots, etc. at one of our local clinics.
But I'm so worried about him now. I can't get a heating pad out there - there's no electricity to the shed.
I can't reach him - he's crammed way back into the underground area - and even if I could, I don't want to get shredded by a feral cat.
It's going to be so cold here the next few days, we're getting hammered by snow tomorrow, and I have to leave early on Wednesday morning for work; I'll be gone three days.
I have asked the head of our local rescue group for any ideas - my neighbor can put out food about 15 feet from the shed, but can't do more because she's handicapped. Food isn't a problem - even warmth isn't the biggest problem because he is out of the wind and can snuggle into some towels and dry blankets. The problem is his immune system seems to be failing him.
All I can do at this point is turn it over to the rescue group, or - we live in a very rural area - put him out of his misery if he looks worse tomorrow / hasn't moved.
I know there are many other creatures out there in the cold, and my heart breaks for them.
I just needed to tell someone.

(56,912 posts)if you locate it properly he would get into one of these:
Someone made this little shelter for the cats out of an upside-down styrofoam cooler duct taped to a board. Put the towels and fleece blanket inside

He wasn't there this morning, and he hadn't eaten the moist food I put out. I put out fancy feast a little while ago - hopefully he'll go for that.
It's going to be so cold here tonight.
I'll try to do that shelter when I get back, if he's still in this world. My neighbor wont' have a problem with it being in her side yard...

(50,130 posts)Looks like the entirety of the circumstances are not in this little guy's favor. You have been so compassionate. It's really hard to help a sick kitty who won't let you come close.
I always think of the phrase from that song "Bless the beasts and the children..."
And bless you for your caring heart.

(13,661 posts)I appreciate it very much.

(112,193 posts)Hopefully, he will back to his normal ways soon. It's tough seeing animals suffer through the difficult weather.
Keep in mind that the mating season for many animals occur within the next couple of months so it you can get your friend neutered it will help with the stray population.

(13,661 posts)Had him euthanized; stayed with him until his heart stopped.
Poor sweet creature was about half the weight he should have been, had so many issues (including blindness), an unnaturally fast heart rate, he walked/listed to one side ... just a sick baby. Broke my heart to see him so frail. I've been putting food out for weeks; for whatever reason he just hasn't been able to get to it or eat enough of it. I think he got an upper respiratory infection, couldn't smell the food, stopped eating much of it (though he would eat about 1/4 of a can but no more) and the brutally cold weather we've had didn't help.
He's over the rainbow bridge with no more fear or pain. Just so damn hard to do.

(1,136 posts)At least it was peaceful for him at the end and someone who cared was with him.
I really admire for you for all you did to try to help him, and the kindness at the end.
Hugs to you.

(13,661 posts)hard for the vet to find a vein; the first shot to relax him did so, but the second shot caused him some discomfort, I'm afraid.
But I really don't think he was much with us even when I first brought him in - I think his systems had already started to fail.
I wish I'd caught him sooner, but at least he didn't have a prolonged end.
Thank you for your hugs.

(13,661 posts)It was hard - it wasn't entirely easy for him at the end. But tonight he's not cold, or hungry, or afraid, or feeling bad. He's at peace.
back to you. Thank you.

(13,661 posts)I appreciate that. I've saved several, but this is the second boy in my neighborhood over the past few years who hasn't made it. The poor males get so thrashed fighting over territory. And this little boy was at a disadvantage from the start - small and the vet suspected had been malnourished as a kitten. Just made me weep.
