They rarely blitz but still generate more pass rush than anyone (which is something Manning rarely has trouble with). Here is a great explanation on their 4-3 hybrid. They also have tons of other articles titled The 4-3 Under Defense, Part I: An Introduction; The 4-3 Under Defense, Part II: The Seahawks' Hybrid; The 4-3 Under Defense: Coverage Schemes; Seahawks' 4-3 Under Player Types: Safeties; The Seahawks' 4-3 Under Player Types: Cornerbacks; The Leo End and the Blitz; Seahawks 4-3 Player Types: Linebackers; Seahawks 4-3 Player Types: Defensive Line; The Leo End and the Run Defense; Seahawks 4-3 Defense: Press Coverage and The Jam.

I think I lost track of where the article was that explained why they are able to create pressure based on how they line up -- http://www.fieldgulls.com/2012/5/7/2999852/on-seahawks-defensive-scheme-versatility-diversity

The thing that makes it unique is they use an athletic big guy at the far end which is also makes it a 3-4 if you want to look at it that way.

I think he is the greatest but he played in a conference with a team that was overall better for the most part, when he did get the defense he won a Super Bowl. Now he makes it to a Super Bowl against a team that is #1 in the NFC in rushing, #2 in yards per pass attempt, and #1 in the league in defense. Best front 7 and a big secondary, I think Earl Thomas is 6'4"

I didn't think of that.

I remember when I was younger, I was about 10-12, I'm 27 now - I thought Elway was one of the greatest living humans. Now he seems kinda like an asshole.

A Prima Donna coming out of college...when most were grateful for being drafted, he wouldn't sign with the team that drafted him...Baltimore Colts at the time. Then was caught gambling on football games. I'm a lifelong NY Giants fan... best Giants' win ever...their first Super Bowl win, Phil Sims quarterbacking, LT causing Havoc... handing Elway a loss.

Frank Kush he led the Sun Devils to several successful seasons in the 70's and was accused of punching the punter after a bad punt, he was dismissed after it was found that he was pressuring players and coaches to keep quiet during the school's internal investigation.

I have a different view of the draft than most sports fans, this isn't a good comparison but in the regular work world you study a trade then get chosen by a company and it may not be a company that is good for you. I think the draft is bad for players in some respects in that they could get chosen by this team that has too much competition for your position while another team may work for you.

I understand they can't do a free agent system since the idea behind the reverse order draft was to help out the teams that weren't competitive and couldn't sell tickets and players signed with the Packers, Bears, Giants, the dominate teams of the era. Also teams were dropping out left and right and ensured league viability.

I like the idea of a spending cap, the losers get more to spend on incoming players so they can offer more to top players and players don't get stuck in bad situations especially for late round picks where if they're cut, they're done. A problem with the draft was since you couldn't compete for services you really didn't have an idea what a player was worth. That problem has been pretty much eliminated with rookie-scale contracts but what that led to is rather than players staying another year to improve their draft position, instead you see more and more underclassmen hurrying up to get into the NFL, get off the rookie contract, sign a big one. There was a record number of underclassmen that declared which is more than the record last year.

Not just from the players point-of-view, it is a crap shoot for the owners. There is a lot of pressure when they have an early first round pick (not as much since rookie contracts), don't know whether to trade or draft a player they don't need but is best player available or something like that or make the right pick. A spending allows them to get the players they need but a lot of the risks are gone from that stand point with rookie scale contracts.

Aside from all that, not too often in sports do players have leverage and I have no problems when the exercise it. Obviously someone just happy to be drafted doesn't have that option and in that case the team has leverage over him and his options for holding out or demanding trade depend on how good he is which sucks in-case he has to play for an asshole like Greg Schiano

slipping out of Baltimore in 1984 in a less than honorable fashion.

I do understand your points about the draft and spending caps and agree. I also understand that life is hell when you're more of less locked into one team, which was the case for so many players until 1992. In that regard I understood, even then, why he did what he did. But, the little shit (Elway) had an arrogance about him that grated. I don't recall all the details of his gambling problem, although they did find he wasn't betting on his own games... it was more of his "the rules don't apply to me" attitude.

Of course, you could have pointed out that Eli Manning did the same thing decades later when he refused to play for San Diego and went to my beloved Giants instead.

From a purely 'football as entertainment' perspective, Elway was fun to watch as long at it wasn't your team he was shredding and you took a pass on the post game interview.

Arrogant, entitled, obnoxious RW jerks, both of them! Overpaid, overrated crybabies! (IMHO)

Ditto for their boss, John Elway--Fuck him with a pitchfork! (Taking the Bronco team with them is just too bad. GO SEAHAWKS!!)

I heard anything bad about him except that he is Republican. Don't know Eli much at all. I can imagine they'd be entitled just by having the luck of being the seed of a NFL QB.

The overpaid part is tricky, as long as fans keep pouring money into the NFL, the players should get a chunk of that. Basically the reason why they're paid is because we want to watch them play. Manning certainly draws people to the sets, I believe the Dallas(which is always a draw since they're always on TV) game was one of the highest rated ever.

Eli Manning got a huge contract after average stats but I always looked at contracts should be based on what you're expected to do rather than what you done, he had a couple of seasons w/ top flight numbers (especially the year they got Cruz) but he drifted back to average, I think he was below average this season - I don't know what is going on, don't follow the Giants.

He's the head coach at Jacksonville now.

Seattle's DC is now Dan Quinn.

Quinn returns to Seattle where he was assistant head coach/defensive line coach in 2009 under Jim Mora and was one of three holdovers in 2010 on Carroll's staff when he coached the defensive line. He was instrumental in the position switch of Red Bryant from defensive tackle to defensive end in 2010.

Dan Quinn left Seattle to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Florida where his defenses ranked in the top-10 in the country in 2011 and 2012.

He began his NFL coaching career in San Francisco as its defensive quality control coach in 2001 before moving to coach the 49ers defensive line from 2003-04. He also coached the defensive lines for the Miami Dolphins (2005-06) and the N.Y. Jets (2007-08).
