(6,151 posts)if you enter a pasture with a bunch of cows and sit quietly on the ground, they'll come and form a close circle around you, facing inwards. Then they'll stand there and stare as long as you care to let them. I've often wondered if this behavior is more than simple curiosity. Maybe they react as if the human sitting down is a calf, perhaps in trouble or something.
BTW, I don't suggest this rural pastime when there are young calves about, since cows are very protective of their young and far less accepting of anything unusual at that stage. The very same cow that accepted you w/o question in October or November might be ready to trample you on sight in Spring.
