(28,749 posts)I don't think he really could be compared to any current politician.
The show really talks some long walks away from reality, but it is a guilty pleasure of mine.

(100,100 posts)It is a bit far removed from reality but one thing I could totally picture is when Frank went on CNN and tried to come up with an anagram for "EDUCATION" and couldn't do it, and then someone takes the interview and puts a techno beat to it. I could totally picture that happening in real life.

(28,749 posts)No spoilers but season 2 gets quite a bit more unrealistic...

(131,077 posts)and Frank Urquart! (the British one!) Ours probably don't (???) resort to murder!!!
Oliver Cromwell???

(60,010 posts)Yes indeed.
Season 2 is much better than season 1.
I'm actually looking forward to Season 3.

(81,441 posts)I already know a couple of the spoilers. My son told me - he's obsessed. He knows I'm the type who goes directly to the last few pages of any book to read the ending before I start at the beginning. (I figure life itself throws you enough surprises, thankyouverymuch. In fiction, at least, I get to find out ahead of time how it ends.)

(11,065 posts)I can't remember a lot of it, so I was thinking of watching it all again from the beginning after I'm done with The Borgias.

(14,946 posts)It's really good! But even gorier than the Walking Dead!
TorchTheWitch
(11,065 posts)they believe they'll be wrapping it up with a 2 hour special. I'm surprised that so few people watched it, but I think that had to do with crap advertising because it is really good. I love it. I watched all three seasons before but was doing other stuff at the same time so wasn't paying that much attention. This time I actually sat on the sofa to watch, and I like it even better than the first time around. I always did like Jeremy Irons, but I really like him in this. At this point I think I'm about half way through the 3rd season. I'll probably finish it tomorrow since I'll not have anything to do really until the damn snow stops.
I never really thought it was all that gory. Game of Thrones can be really gory though I love it and just look away at the really gross parts, but I never saw Walking Dead, so I don't know what that one is like... I think the title turned me off to have any interest. Since I stay away from horror movies because I don't like gory stuff I may have just trained myself when to shut my eyes or look away and don't really notice that I do.

(14,946 posts)The costumes and sets alone captured my attention but the acting, casting are perfect. Two hour special next year?
Walking Dead is great! Very gory but I have always been intrigued by post apocalyptic scenarios. I wouldn't last very long in a world filled with zombies! Or Borgias! Nor would I want to!

(15,185 posts)I binge watched the first two seasons. I thought both leads are great.
I think his character reflects a lot of skilled politicians of the past and present, though I can't think of anyone so high up that has actually murdered someone.
But I think the writers got a lot of inspiration from Lyndon Johnson. If you read the Caro books (and I highly recommend them), you'll see a lot of similar tactics Underwood uses (Johnson was Senate Majority Leader and was known to cajole and get in people's faces to get what he wanted).
I also think it was interesting to have the character play a Southern Democrat, a dying breed if there ever was one...and that too set in Gaffney. That peach tower is real. And God, it is UGLY.
