So I watched "12 Years a Slave" & "Dallas Buyers Club" this past week & not sure where I cried more

I rented "Dallas Buyers Club" and I think I totally lost it with 2 scenes done by Jared Leto (Rayon). First was when he visited his father, who did not approve of the fact that his 'son' was actually a Transgender woman. My heart just broke watching Rayon dressed in a man's suit trying to get some sort of sympathy from her father. I was bawling but not as much as the scene right before Rayon's death. If ever there was a tragic character in the movie it was Rayon. And although Rayon was a fictional character I know that in this world there are thousands of Rayons who have suffered thru the same.

I didn't think it could bawl any more until I saw "12 Years a Slave" yesterday at noon (only showing at the local big screen). I mean the story in itself is heartbreaking because it was true. But to watch the scene where Patsy was whipped because she went to a friend on a neighboring plantation who gave her a cake of soap. It just ripped your heart out watching what happened.

Jared Leto (Rayon from DBC) and Lupito Nyong'o (Patsy from 12 years) both truly deserved their awards.

or 12 Years a Slave. I'm not going to watch 12 Years a Slave because it looks too violent (I just don't watch any "torture" movies).

I'm looking forward to Dallas Buyers Club and Jared Leto's performance.

When I was younger I could never identify with gender identity issues. I always felt extremely sorry for men who liked to dress in woman's clothing as it seemed so "tragic" in my mind because they didn't really look feminine. They still looked like men. I think movies like Trick where I saw a "drag queen" as a confident person helped me understand.

I believe Transamerica http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407265/ is the single movie that really made me understand that "trans" people are just trying to get through the day like everyone else. It is the first time I saw "trans" people as normal and could sympathize with them. I know it sounds prejudiced but I really was prejudiced. I am thankful for movies like these that gave me a real perspective.
