Amphidromia

Amphidromia was Greek custom for the fifth (or seventh) day after the birth of a child. The women who had lent their assistance at the birth washed their hands at that time. A feast was given and visitors were encouraged to circle or dance around the fire with the infant to introduce him or her to the household gods. Which seems like a terrible idea. Gifts which are mentioned include cuttlefish and marine polyp. The house was decorated on the outside with olive branches if the child was a boy, or with garlands of wool if the child was a girl.
