Childermas Day

No work must ever be started on Childermas Day, December 28, also called Holy Innocents Day. It is an ill omen. Children must be whipped on this day so that the memory of Herod's murder of the Innocents might dwell in them. You may not don a new suit of clothing or pare your nails on Childermas Day.

is usually from W.C. Hazlitt's Dictionary of Faiths and Folklore. I have this edition.

There is also a free e-book called Observations on Popular Antiquities that has a lot of the same information.
