The Walking Dead 4.1 "A" - Season Finale (Spoiler Alert!)

Many paths collide; Rick faces sheer brutality; the group struggles to survive.

I've heard we could be getting a cliffhanger or two tonight. I wonder if the single letter title is important at all?

Who will die?

It isn't just the characters that need hope. The audience does too.

Rick looks as if he has just seen and been through something more horrifying than he has experienced so far. (and that's saying a lot)

At first I thought Rick's eyes looked blank but that isn't it - his eyes look to me as if he is still seeing that horrific event. He's having a mind wobble and could go either way ...off the deep end or back to reality, of sorts. He has the look of a person who is trying to absorb something terrible. Something so shocking that it shuts the brain down.

and the episodes are too short at 45 minutes each. They need to make some double episodes for premiers and finales so that it doesn't seem like they just kill off characters summarily to rush along the story or keep their budget down. But who knows maybe as a twist no-one from the group will die tonight.

and it's hard for him to talk about - especially after watching Rick rip a man's throat out with his teeth.

Daryl will tell. In between plotting & planning in the cattle car, they will all tell their stories - to some degree.

Besides, I think there's more to Beth abduction than just a simple kidnapping and that will be explored next season.

The reunion felt rushed to me but I can live with it.

Maybe everyone assumes anyone they don't see must be dead and that talk can wait because the needs of the living are more important.

I hope that "just gone" isn't the writers' way of simply writing her off the show. "She's just gone, so no point in looking for her." And nobody ever worries about her or mentions her ever again (as it sometimes happens on TV shows).

Also Beth had been the closest thing to a mother that Judith had ever know, so for that alone I hope they at least make an attempt to find her. I was actually pretty surprised that it wasn't Beth who had taken Judith out of the prison...

Terminus turned out to be what I expected. That entire scene about setting snares and the funnel in the trail that directs the quarry into the trap definitely foreshadowed it.

October is so far away!

195. Did you notice what Gareth called them

when they went into the train car? After Rick and his group were noticed inside the building and everyone seemed so nice, they all introduced themselves, so Gareth know their names. When he told them to go into the car, he called them by their weapons, or in Carl's case, just the boy. Michonne was the samurai, Darryl was the crossbow and I don't remember what he called Rick. Dehumanizing them?

the Zombies, and the not-yet-zombie humans in many ways.

Then we see Rick take a bite out of that guy, making the comparison literal.

Well I know Carl agrees with me.

But man, Rick sees a frickin chain to a watch and ASSUMES the very worst and initiates the confrontation? And he *did* kill that guy in the bathroom.

I dunno, I think we the audience are just on the side of "our friends' because we've known them so long, but damn, maybe they're not really good guys at all.

Every one is just trying to stay alive.

They all have PTSD.

I wonder what I would do if I had to live in that world.

The prison was the first safe place they had.

The rules we live by don't count in there world.

I don't blame Rick for what he did.

Carl was going to be raped.

190. I know. But I wasn't talking about the throat bite

I was talking about his reaction to the Terminus folks, just because he saw a guy with a pocket watch. He pulls a gun on him for crissakes, because he has a chain in his pocket?

If the roles were reversed and Rick et al were the lords of Terminus, as they were of the prison, you bet they'd be super suspicious of newcomers. But when Rick's gang are the newcomers, they feel threatened when people distrust them.

That's all I'm saying. They are as bad as the guys they think are the bad guys. Which is probably the whole point.

It was also the riot gear and the poncho. Rick's instincts were correct. Those are bad guys, possibly cannibals.

The rest of the group (being held prisoner in the cargo container) indicates Rick was right.

The Terminus folks also acted like they were used to the routine. Shooting at their feet, leading them towards the container, like a trap foreshadowed earlier in the episode by the rabbit trap scene.

194. I think monsters don't know they're monsters.
Tue Apr 1, 2014, 03:37 PM
Apr 2014

Actual monsters don't question their actions.

Carl was questioning himself and his actions.

Rick's actions have sent him off in spirals of guilt and hallucinations.

Michonne recognized what she had allowed herself to become and what she was becoming again (after the prison attack and scattering) and said never again.

They aren't monsters.

Rick used the only weapon he had available to save them - his mouth. Carl was in the process of being raped, Daryl was being beat to death and Michonne was next up for rape. They were all marked for death. Their weapons weren't handy. His mouth was.

While Rick was sitting against the truck, covered in blood, he looked as if he might snap again. He didn't. He finally came to terms with doing what you have to do to protect those you care about and not letting that destroy you or your ability to care. He told Daryl he was his brother. Before, Rick closed himself off from the rest because he felt damaged. He felt guilty.

Lizzie was a monster. Not the same kind of monster as the "Claimers" but still a monster.

You get the sense that Lizzie was always sick. Recall how Mika told her to look at the flowers, just look at the flowers like you're supposed to do - indicating this was a long term way for dealing with Lizzie's episodes. (her breaks)

Lizzie was most likely born that way. That's the sense I get anyway. Mentally unstable and living in her own world. The coming of the walkers just amplified and channeled her illness.

Poor Mika - wouldn't survive if it meant killing humans because she felt bad for what they used to be. I applauded her understanding, especially for one so young. For her it was absolute - killing people was wrong even if it meant your own death. Most people want to live and will respond to threats to their person.

But some people are seen as threats simply because some sociopath or deranged person sees them that way. Wouldn't matter how little of a threat they actually were - Maggie's group wasn't a threat to Terminus - they just wanted some help. The army guys weren't a threat to Woodbury or the Governor - but he wanted them dead anyway. Rick's group wasn't a threat to Woodbury and the Governor had to lie about it - because he wanted them dead anyway. Just like he lied to Tara and her sister and that other group - because he wanted them dead anyway.

The "Claimers" were a group of sociopaths. Born or made that way through childhood trauma...like Merle, but without the grain of redemption...for Merle loved his brother and that was his saving grace.

The "Claimers" were talking about raping Michonne in that house. Rick heard them. They didn't know they were talking about Michonne but they were. One of them said he had first go on the woman the shirt belonged to - the shirt Michonne washed and was drying before she and Carl left out. A group of men joking about who gets to rape a woman first is a group of men that are monsters. Rick had to get out. He had to warn both Carl and Michonne. Otherwise, they could have all died in that house.

Terminus is filled with cannibals (is my best guess based on the things I saw in the finale) - nothing good guy about cannibals. Before the breakdown of society (the society the characters knew) cannibalism was a taboo. Just because things have changed doesn't mean that has changed.

You don't have to prey on desperate people and trick them into entering your lair just so you can eat them in order to survive. Doing that makes you a monster. Even if they aren't cannibals - they still tricked people with the sanctuary BS and then stole their belongings and locked them in a train car. Good people don't do that.

The Governor didn't have to kill anyone to be in charge - he wanted to kill them. He didn't have to kill the people he killed to survive - he wanted to kill them. He was a monster.

Rick noticed the watch, the knapsack, the poncho and the police riot gear - it wasn't just one single item that did it. He knew those items belonged to people in his group.

I think your question is a question that the audience is supposed to ask.

And I'd wager there will be differing opinions.

I don't have a favorable opinion of Carol for killing Karen and David. I know a lot of other people do. I used to like Carol a lot.

I am glad Tyreese forgave her though. But for his sake, not hers.

I still wouldn't sneeze or cough around Carol.

considered good, and still come back to the light.'

Just like with Carol killing those 2 people.

Our people may not be the "good guys" but probably the "as good as you can be and survive" guys.

201. Did anybody notice?
Wed Apr 2, 2014, 01:29 PM
Apr 2014

When the group was looking to escape from the Termites, they ran through a warehouse-like room with a bunch of vehicles in it. Did anybody notice if one of the vehicles was the car that escaped with Beth? They were only there for a few seconds, and this thought didn't occur to me until the next day.

(I have not been able to re-watch yet)
