What was the funniest, in hindsight, piece of advice your parents/caretakers gave you ?

It's a bit funny to me, but apparently during the Great Depression, it was common to put cardboard in your shoes to make them last longer. Despite the fact my dad had enough money to resole my shoes or buy me new ones..."put some cardboard in them, son". I'm sure my son will be laughing at me one day.

What's yours ?

3. I grew up in the 60's and 70's--and got advice from the Dark Ages B4 3rd wave Feminism.

Mostly from adult women! Things like: Don't be too loud and boisterous, don't express your opinion too stridently, let a man help you even though you can do it yourself. Don't act smarter, stronger, more in control, put his needs above your own...

Listen, it was a real thing back then! Schools offered Home Economics courses, so we could learn to cook and sew like good wifeys. I took such a course as late as 1970--this wasn't the Leave it to Beaver era!

And I have a friend who's 60 now--she was sent to ****Charm School**** at age 13. I tell no lie!

I thank God for Gloria Steinem every day of my womenly life!

Me: "Hey, Mom! I'm getting gray hair!"

Mom: "On your head?"

Implied advice: Calm down. It could be worse.

15. How did you get that gif?

A DUer had that gif when I first came here around 2004. She was banned from DU several years ago and died maybe 4 years ago.

I'm trying to recall her name. Lefty Lawyer? Something like that.

I think it was her post, Old Lefty Lawyer, that had it. So I right clicked, copied it, took it.

eta: ok my mistake, I don't think it was hers. I can't even find her journal yet.

I was telling my 94-year-old mother that I'm in the process of getting full dentures. Her response: Well, dear, you'll have to find something to do with your tongue.

So NOT what I thought she'd say!
