Note: Cross-Posting this to the Computers and Internet GroupSo I'm trying to be all 21st Century here by getting rid of my home phone and cable service. Everything via cell phone or internet.
I currently have Comcast with a cable and internet bundle for $110/month. When I inquired with Comcast about internet only, they said it would be $75/month for the "unbundled" price, which sounded to me like I was getting robbed.
Checking around, I don't have U-verse in my neighborhood and Dish Network internet is also $75 a month for unbundled service (less if I use cheaper data plan, but I assume I'm going to want all the speed and data that I can get).
Any alternatives, or is $75/month a reasonable rate for high speed internet access?
I'm in both the Milwaukee suburbs and the Chicago suburbs (long story).

(15,805 posts)Would love to eliminate my land line, but my "garden level" apartment has lousy and unreliable cell reception. Same for television without cable (and, please, nobody yell at me about the TV, it's company for someone who can't get out and do what others can). I need the internet for staying in touch with family around the country, can't use dialup because of need to be able to see and send large graphics.
Moving to a different apartment is out of the question at present, given that the vacancy rate around here is at 2% (thanks to influx of fracking workers), and the available places are scary in daylight.
So, yes, suggestions for alternatives would be most welcome!

(8,747 posts)Unless you have terrifically high speeds. Charter is offering Charter Internet Plus - $29.99 month for 12 months / $44.99 month year 2 up to 30 / 4. But they are starting to upgrade areas to 60 megs. I'm getting 64 / 5 right now in Ft Worth. We're one of the first areas to get new speeds.
But unfortunately the ISPs are starting to screw people on the rates because they know so many are cutting everything but the Internet.
Call Comcast back and ask for the Retentions Department. Tell them you want just the Internet, and ask for the best price / speed combo you can get.

(13,992 posts)I'm hoping that since I'm a current customer, they'll cut me at least a small break -- even if it's for a year.

(36,281 posts)SuddenLink in Northern California. When I first bought the service over a decade ago the company representative could not understand why I didn't want the basic cable bundle. "It's only $25 more!" or something like that. He just didn't get it that I wasn't interested in saving money-- I simply didn't want TV, not at any price.
Personally, I think $75 for data only is a bit pricey, but if that's the only provider or the best deal you can get, what you gonna do?

(95,337 posts)there are no other choices in downtown Wilmington or I would have switched to them by now. I can't even get FIOS from Verizon.

(15,774 posts)Was laid off, couldn't afford it and did without all these years. Have a great antenea that picks up digital. I use T mobile for the cell. I am looking into getting a computer wifi soon but it hasn't been so pressing. Am anxious to see the results.

(13,992 posts)Getting a digital antenna for local television and using Chromecast to watch Netflix, Hulu+ and just about everything else.
The consensus seems to be that while $75 is a little steep, it's actually not out of line. And it's for cable internet, which is pretty much as fast as it gets.

(15,774 posts)they are retired and the cable company went up on the rates to $80. I finally will be able to get Mom off of Faux Snews.
BTW: They are with Comcast.

(8,462 posts)I pay $120/mo for Comcast Business class internet, for just internet 50down/10up.
So I'm paying a premium for those times I have service issues that I can get a hold of a person and they will roll a truck. It also has no caps on data usage unlike residential (even though it's the same wires...)

(1,136 posts)to see what they can offer via cell? like a mifi or whatever it's called? I looked to turn it on for my cell and 2 years ago was only $20/month extra for my cell. Unsure how many devices you can hook up and I'm sure it's more expensive now for unlimited data.

(13,992 posts)I went to the cable website and checked my data usage -- average of 110 GB use per month. Based on what I'm seeing so far, it's not very promising.
T-Mobile's plan comes close (not a T-Mobile user, but I'm pretty much a whore when it comes to brand loyalty), so I'll do some more checking.

(16,199 posts)But it's U verse 12Mb down, 2 up. Like others, I use an antenna for TV, but I have to use a Clearstream 4 since I'm 45 miles (as crow flies) from Hartford's towers and 54 from Providence, RI. Amazingly, I get them without an amplifier.
Use this website to figure out what you will likely receive for TV. http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/dtvmaps/

(4,373 posts)for internet and they included a land line with unlimited long distance for that price, so $75 for internet only sounds high to me - I use Century Link, which is Sprint.
A Roku, Amazon Prime, Acorn, Neflix, and Hulu Plus...so a little over $20 per month for TV, and lots of choices.

(13,992 posts)ATT internet service for $15/mo (I assume an introductory offer and the slowest speed they offer). I just checked yesterday and there's no U-verse in my neighborhood, so I'm not sure if these are two different products. I'll have to check tomorrow.
I always planned to pay $50 or so per month. And if the connection is reliable and fast enough to stream video, I don't mind paying that or even more. But if I can pay less, of course, I'm all for it.

(95,337 posts)They tried the same thing with me with the internet when I dumped cable TV and said I would have to pay $65 a month for internet. When I challenged them on it they stated they had another $30 option that was a slower speed but available.
I have used the slower speed with mostly no issues in the house. Mind you I can't have Netflix streaming on my TV and then decide to play Diablo 3 on my laptop - won't work. But I live by myself so the slower speed works.
You really have to think about how much internet you might have going at one time. Don't know your family size but if you have a family of 4 that is each doing their own streaming then the lesser plan won't work for you. But if you don't need that much blazing internet then it is an option.

(13,992 posts)And it's pretty bad when Comcast can give "customer service" a bad name...
The person said that the $75/mo was my only option. Now they do have lesser speeds, but I think that I'm going to want the throttle wide open if I'm going to have multiple users streaming video.
I suppose, though, that I could start lower and upgrade -- if they're not going to screw me for that, as well.

(2,533 posts)Frankly the install was botched & I had no phone for 2 days due to it. I also installed a passive HD antenna & that works great in the Portland Ore area.
I went with frontier & have full streaming for a family of 4 & a landline for $61.00 a month.
Comcast had gone to $160.00 & the discussion on the phone with them was like a abusive relationship. Comcast slogan is the customer is our bitch.
At least frontier was as helpful as they could be. The problem was with a local technician. Weakest link & all that. And I am gettinga credit for the problems.
Yes-Ditch Comcast.
Today I get to return the 5 various boxes & all the %$*^$*^ wires & remotes-all gone. And I will let them know in person I will never darken their door again.

(13,992 posts)I'm still trying to figure out if there are ANY other cable providers in my area -- I don't think there are. If I get a sweet deal on the internet, I don't necessarily mind bundling it with home phone -- even though I won't use it.
