The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsProbably belongs on the Computers forum, but I have a question about online forums
I started my own "private" forum/message board on Proboards a few months back. I started it for the use of a group of online liberal acquaintances who used to post on another forum, and got fed up with the right wing stupid. We had been meeting on facebook, but it was a clumsy format.
I have my forum set so that you have to register before accessing any of the pages, and I as moderator need to approve the membership. Fine, works for me. However, when I log on, the forum gives various statistics about use -- who is online now, who has been online in the past 24 hours, number of posts, etc.
And, it always shows that there have been a number of "guests" -- usually one or two online at the moment, and generally more "guests" have used my forum than members in the past 24 hours.
So, who are these "guests" and how are they getting onto a private forum? Spooks? Search engines? Spies?
