I'm going on vacation in a month to Australia and I'm in the market for a new camera. I'll be going snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, so I'm looking at waterproof cameras would.
Any recommendations?

(68,644 posts)My simple travel camera is a waterproof Nikon Coolpix S30, they've fallen to under $100.
It really depends though on what you'll be doing...
Do you want high speed shutter to capture moving action?
Do you want a high powered optical zoom, or not so important?
Do you want high quality night shots, no flash?
Will you be getting wet? The S30 goes with you snorkling.
I like a camera that uses AA batteries, not some dedicated battery like the GoPro, which I love, I have one but it has a proprietary battery and charger so you need to spend more money.
Also, get extra flash cards and a cheap flash card reader.
I have 64 Gig and 32 Gig, some devices won't read the 64 so be careful.
Have fun down under!

(26,582 posts)We'll be doing some hiking and sightseeing, and I really wanted something that'll work snorkeling. Trip of a lifetime and all that. And I want better pics than my phone so I can print some of them out.
Very excited about the trip! I told my friend I we land in Sydney and are still friends it'll be a successful vacation.

(68,644 posts)If I didn't already love my sporty waterproof CoolPix, I'd buy something newer just like it with WiFi.
This allows for downloading with out the physical card reader, it just talks to your computer.
And some can download right through to youtube or DU through WiFi if you have the right router setup, say at home.
So, work that feature into your searches.
Check this out: Waterproof Coolpix with WiFi for easy uploads to internet and GPS to stamp location of picture:

Again, have fun!

(12,506 posts)I got one of these because I work on a ship deck where seawater splashes get on my stuff. This does video and pictures and it all goes on the data card to transfer to your puter.
