The Vipukirves still has a sharpened blade at the end, but it has a projection coming off the side that shifts the center of gravity away from the middle. At the point of impact, the edge is driven into the wood and slows down, but the kinetic energy contained in the 1.9 kilogram axe head continues down and to the side (because of the odd center of gravity). The rotational energy actually pushes the wood apart like a lever. A single strike can open an 8 cm gap in a log, which is more than enough to separate it.

However, it's gonna set you back $216 USD.

(3,286 posts)5. American Enterprise.
When serving the public interest, as in this case of making firewood, dazzle the consumers with the ability to increase production with an almost criminal disregard for the final product.
Turning a nicely stacked and sustainable fuel source into a pile of more marketable units with a dwindling shelf life seems to be at the heart of all "American Enterprise".
Not to overlook the commercial upside; the haphazard pile of chopped up wood represents another market opportunity in the area of a clever stacking machine or better yet, an unsuspecting child to do the work for pocket money.
