Watching Raiders of the Lost Ark, why didn't Indy just wait?

He knows the true location of the Ark and that the Nazis are digging in the wrong location. Why not just wait till they gave up trying in that area and left?

He could even rescue Marian, distupt their digging operations enough that they can't dig and gets the hell out of there. Then just return later once the Nazis have left that area.

Three months' of shooting in the blazing heat in Tunisia had resulted in a terrible bout of dysentery for Harrison Ford. The original scene, as called for in the script, would have required approximately three days to shoot. Not looking forward to another lengthy shoot under that blistering sun, Ford persuaded Spielberg to try the scene this much shorter way. (One could say Ford was given "the runs" of the place.)

Why is there a huge Nazi military encampment in the Cairo suburbs? The whole WWII North African campaign was all about keeping the German military the hell away from Cairo and the Suez.

may not have had quite that much security, but two years before the Munich Conference the British weren't quite that hostile to the Germans. And who knows how many of those guards were flown in by plane after the initial work crews (led by a Frenchman) got started on their digging? (But obviously before Professor Jones stuck an Aryan in the propworks)

And if it were real-life, there would undoubtedly be various clandestine agents skulking around. But a uniformed military presence with vehicles, weapons and flag officers, no way.

In the comic he lashes himself to the periscope with his whip. Apparently it was never lowered. Plausible? Not very-still a damn fine movie though.

If they submerge, then there's going to be more surface resistance on the hull and the boat moves slower. Since they lost the plane as a way of moving the Ark out of Egypt, supposedly the sub would be in a hurry to get to the secret base and fly the Ark out from there.

I'm just guessing of course. That sequence never made sense to me either.

As you say, speed, use less fuel, air (no scrubbers back then). As this was peace time the sub would have no reason to submerge.

Problem for Indy: When the sub is surfaced there's a watch on duty in the conning tower (sail). Nowhere for him to hide.

Much more logical choice: Commandeer the cargo ship

Probably an insider joke: How many modes of transportation can Indy use. The film is a tribute to the 30's adventure serials.

That's kinda the key part of the puzzle, she's tucked away in some remote Nepalese village with the key staff piece. Would they have ever found her without following Indy? And again, once they did, they only had a piece of that puzzle and were looking in the wrong place. If Indy decides to just bide his time, they may have completely overlooked that hill.

if the Nazis were following Indy or if they had tracked Marian down independently because of her father's possession of the staff piece.

If they found her independently, then they would have taken the complete amulet and would have dug in the right place to begin with.

Well, it looks like I need to re-watch the movie!!
