Seriously - Shingles???!!!

I have this small rash on my lower back that I first noticed on Friday. I tried to think of what it could be (especially since I couldn't see it) and narrowed it down to a rash from some new pants I bought but did not wash before wearing, Scabies, Bed Bugs (I had stayed in a cheap hotel room last week) or a tumor.

Turns out I have fricking SHINGLES

How the *)#$% did I get that (and yes I had chicken pox when I was little so I know it was probably that same damn virus in my body just waiting to fester it's ugly head).

Good thing, it's only on my back in the circle about the size of a small bottom of a small cup.

*)#$ )*(*#_$ Shingles

Get medicated before it spreads, get the shot, and everybody else over fifty get the shot.

I really didn't want the Hydrocondone but my doctor and her husband leave for vacation this week (They run a practice together - only doctors in it). She said better safe than sorry.

I got shingles when I was 13 years old. It covered my left shoulder and went half-way down and around my back.

3rd most painful thing I've ever been through (kidney stone was the worst, childbirth next)

Dad had it, some years ago.

Maybe you could take this opportunity to do a Public Service Announcement, suggesting that DUers obtain the anti-Shingles vaccine? I did it, a few years ago.

Anyone can get shingles but it is worse for older people. The fact that I had chicken pox is how I got the virus. That virus never really goes away, just takes a long extended nap. And add to it stress and a host of other factors probably woke up that puppy in my system.

Go figure.

He continued to get a few places until about day 4 or so. Mild case and very thankful for that, but it still hurt him for about a month or so.

If you're under a lot of stress, had a recent illness, not getting enough sleep....a lot of things can impact your immune system so that the sneaky little bugger pops out.

Herpes viruses never go away.

Hopefully you won't be in too much discomfort since the area is small. Take the hydrocodone if you need to!

Our local candidate for state house got them at the very end of the race and got a shot quickly enough that she did not suffer. Stress again.

with a good vitamin b-complex capsule or powder AND l-lysine capsules. they really do help stave off a shingles episode or shorten the intensity of an episode.

Lots of pain.

Had it about fifteen years ago. And yes, was a very stressful time I was in then.

When I first felt the pains in my torso, I had no idea what was going on. Went to the doc, and after he told me he had no idea what was wrong, he thought to look at my back. Yep, tell-tale rash there.

That was my Christmas present last December. Hit me, of all places, in the knee. Since that joint has been repaired once and I've been told that both knees will need replacing at some point, I figured I'd done something to it. Then, when the big spots showed up with blisters, I thought I'd been bitten by a spider or some other bug. Orthopedist scheduled me for MRI, but GP took one look and knew it was shingles. Before the prescriptions kicked in I was ready to cut the leg off. Damned painful stuff.

Weird. "Shingles" is such a benign-sounding name. Guess it's just shorter than the more accurate painfulrashthatmakesyouhomicidalandsuicidalatthesametime.

Hang in there!

It can be a LOT worse, it travels on a nerve and the nerve can be one of those that go round and around the torso, like, you can't sit or lie down or nuthin'

Mine was mild but the thumb still can mean, it's a pain in the ass to TURN THE KEY to your car or housekey

It does contain a live Chicken pox virus though so I am afraid to get it after having Chicken pox several times. Last time I was a teenager, and avoided small babies like the plague so I would mot get it from them.
