Any R.E.M. Fans Out There?

This is a rare Pavement song from the "No Alternative" album.
Lyrics:
Some bands I like to name check,
And one of them is REM,
Classic songs with a long history
Southern boys just like you and me.
R - E - M
Flashback to 1983,
Chronic Town was their first EP
Later on came Reckoning
Finster's art, and titles to match:
South Central Rain, Don't Go Back To Rockville,
Harbourcoat, Pretty Persuasion,
You were born to be a camera,
Time After Time was my least favourite song,
Time After Time was my least favourite song.
The singer, he had long hair
And the drummer he knew restrait.
And the bass man he had all the right moves
And the guitar player was no saint.
So lets go way back to the ancient times
When there were no 50 states,

And on a hill there stands Sherman
Sherman and his mates.
And they're marching through Georgia,
we're marching through Georgia,
we're marching through Georgia
G-G-G-G-Georgia
They're marching through Georgia,
we're marching through Georgia,
marching through Georgia
G-G-G-G-Georgia
and there stands REM

(Aye Sir, Aye Sir, Aye Sir they're coming, Aye Sir, move those wagons, Aye
Sir, Artillery's in place Sir, Aye Sir, Aye Sir, hide it, hide it, Aye
Sir, run, run.)

Radio Free Europe. A different version was released on Murmer.

Always wondered, what song is the b-side?

Two of them were hand made by the band or their friends.

Edit - B side was Sitting Still.

which I was a member of for a long while. They gave awesome gifts every year. The single is Dark Globe (cover of Syd Barret song). Lots of other stuff like that I've either given away to charity, given to friends, or had stolen from my place (I used to throw a lot of parties, lol). I saw them at the Lone Star Lounge in Ann Arbor (right before Murmur came out). It was pouring rain and only about 75 people showed up, and it rocked. A few months later - right after release of Murmur, some friends & I drove from Ann Arbor to Chicago to see them at the Aragon Ballroom (I think that's what it was called). From that show I felt they could be huge. They did not disappoint with their subsequent releases. I heard Radio Free Europe on WCBN FM Ann Arbor, got Chronic Town, taped it & shared it with all my pals & loved them ever since.

7. I was obsessed with REM in the 80's, and obsessed with Pavement in the 90's.

Went on a pilgrimage to Athens (never spotted them) and met Michael Stipe once but was too tongue-tied to really say much of anything. A guy there too handed him a cassette of his band, Michael took it and put in his front shirt pocket, patted it, then told the guy thanks and "I'll give it a listen". After Green I lost interest but will always love them and respect them. Especially how tightly they control the rights to their songs. I hope to never hear one in a commercial.

Both bands have a unique sound unto themselves, and soooo influential. Stephen Malkmus's solo work is pretty damn good too.

Thanks for posting this, haven't heard it in a long time!

Oh - I still have the No Alternative CD.

Thanks for sharing here. What a great video of that tragic war that I too opposed with all my heart. And the Alaska shots are spectacular, the oranges pinks and blues. Perfect vids for a couple of great Pavement tunes.

The band is The Jicks but the label insisted his name be in there - so they are Steve Malkmus and The Jicks

I love REM!!!

My personal favorite albums are Reckoning and Life's Rich Pageant, but they have noteworthy songs on all their albums.

I only saw them once in concert in Austin around 1990, but I didn't have a lot of disposable income at the time. The first album I got into was Life's Rich Pageant during college in my "turn on, tune in, drop out" period. The "Flowers of Guatemala" was a definite favorite.
