The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm feeling melancholy today.
I think my wife and I could both use a vacation, but she just started a new job in January and doesn't have any vacation time yet. We haven't gone on a vacation since our honeymoon two and a half years ago.
I need weekend getaway ideas. We live about 50 miles away from Cincinnati, Ohio, to give you an idea of our location. We went up to Cleveland and checked out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a weekend before we were married. We had a good time with that, and they change up the exhibits periodically so it might be a new experience going again three years later.
But I'm thinking that something totally different might be better. What says the lounge?

(149,631 posts)How about a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water House?
I've seen it, and it's amazing.

(8,492 posts)I'm not familiar with Ohio, but the husband and I were just discussing cabin rentals on Sunday (we're in the same boat as you). It's more appealing, and usually less expensive, than a hotel. A nice quiet spot for just the two of you.
My search for "Cincinnati Ohio cabin rentals" came up with this:

(55,013 posts)I agree. hell even a motel 6 can be a nice break from the grind of home (especially if it is as dirty as mine LOL)
The husband isn't fond of B&Bs, though. Not sure why. Bad past life experience?
I keep talking about a long weekend up to the White Mts. One of these days.... /sigh

(55,013 posts)but sometimes they are a little heavy on the delicate antiques and lace, if you know what I mean.
There is one in Elsah, IL (along the Mississippi) that is just gorgeous, but they did overdo it on the frillies. Cool little town (though stuffy).
This is it!

(8,492 posts)...than it was 30 years ago when I stayed there with my first husband. Our room was almost completely white with lots of eyelet, lace and linen. Really adorable little place with a cute little gift shop.
Green is my favorite color, so I like that one, too.

(24,370 posts)The National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton is superb. If it is something you're interested in, It should not be missed;

They hold one of the only two surviving examples of the XB-70 Valkyrie, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful aircraft ever produced;

(10,418 posts)I'm originally from Dayton, but I haven't been to the Air Force museum since I was a little kid. I remember them having one of the capsules from our early space explorations.
What was the original purpose of the XB-70 Valkyrie?

(24,370 posts)A fascinating aircraft with an interesting albeit short history.
It could fly almost as high and almost as fast as the SR-71

The museum has a remarkable collection and is worth a look.

They have lodges, cabins, and campgrounds (if you want to try roughing it!). There are parks that are as close as the Ohio River (literally in the Ohio River for Blennerhassett Island Historical Park). You can golf, hike, geo-cache, swim, bike, learn about history, photography, wildflowers, bluegrass music, birds, steam trains, sheep-shearing/carding/spinning/weaving, and fly fishing. And that's just events planned for the month of May.

(10,418 posts)Although I do believe we'd have to go for one of the lodges. My wife wouldn't go for the campgrounds.

(6,251 posts)The cottages and modern cabins are up-to-date and very nice, and you get a degree of privacy and roominess that you can't find in a lodge. I've stayed in the pioneer cabins -- no electricity or running water! - but I really enjoy cooking on a wood stove and dining by lantern. At least, I enjoy doing it for a weekend.

(55,013 posts)an overnight road trip sounds like a great idea. see some scenery, stay someplace different, enjoy a nice meal or two. Or pack a picnic (healthy even)!

(23,272 posts)Grant Park - everything's free and outdoors.
The "museum campus" has all the biggies - Science and Industry, The Field (natural history), Aquarium, and Planetarium are all very, very close to each other which makes deciding which one to visit pretty easy once you get into that part of Chicago.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

(130,968 posts)I had similar questions when I lived in Chicago, about where to go to a getaway. My brother and sister in law did the DUNES in Michigan.
Here are a couple of quick links. There are many other options.

(4,442 posts)Camping is fairly cheap, and if you can find a somewhat isolated site you can spend quality time together without dealing with crowds or schedules. Make a camp fire, have a drink (if you are so inclined) and RELAX together.

(27,121 posts)But if there are any state or national parks in your area, those can be cheap getaways if you have a tent.
I know the feeling.
Sometimes you just need to "get away" to clear your mind and spirit and come back home grateful to see it after having a break from it.
