10 Who Perished on the Barton Broad the Day after Christmas

On the 26th of December 1781, 10 young men were crossing the Barton Broad by boat after working at Yarmouth when their boat capsized and they all perished. Four were brothers, the youngest was 10 years old. There is a stone memorial at Barton Turf Church for them at reads: Weep not for us 'tis all in vain, for your loss is our eternal gain. We sleep in dust, free from pain 'til Christ shall rise us up again. Weep for your sins and them refrain, then we shall meet in heaven again.
