It's practically raining kittens as feral cats start having babies by the basketful in time for the warm weather.
They're even turning up in the storm drains.
Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Field Services Manager Todd Stosuy responded to a call for help Wednesday afternoon when a concerned resident reported the sound of a cat's cries coming from underground in the area of Soquel Drive and Prather Lane. With a little patience and the allure of an open can of food, a 6-week-old female kitten, since tentatively dubbed "Monkey" by Stosuy, emerged from the drain.
"She was very skittish and nervous. She wanted someone to rescue her, but was very unsure about the world around her," Stosuy said. "The kitten was just looking at me, just staring up at me, almost like, are you my mommy?"

(6,011 posts)Probably lucky to be in the news, someone will see her and want to adopt her. I would, if I could!

(22,896 posts)If she's feral, she'll need to be socialized first. I hope she's adopted out fast!!
Thanks for posting

(56,177 posts)My last little feral, Katie, didn't need to be socialized at all...came right up to me and has absolutely no fear...loves people...she's really the exception, though.

(22,896 posts)She seems "unferal" to me, the way she's allowing the humane officer to hold her.
I love cats!

(34,107 posts)No kittens here yet...but it seems to be the time of year I get lots of cats who are either feral looking for a place to live or cats that have been dumped come looking around. There will be kittens but mostly they stay away from my barns now, probably because I bring my dog with me and I am there so much.
A beautiful light gray tabby yesterday. I saw it twice. Both times it sat there, even with my big poodle looking at it, as if it wanted to come up. Now there is food out again. Hopefully more cats get it than raccoons or opossum or whatever else might wander in.

(56,177 posts)I took in 3 kittens recently from where I feed...only two litters so far, the first two are sisters, and the other is about 3 weeks younger...good news that I'm getting most of the adults fixed so it's not as bad...bad news is that these 3 are probably the only ones that survived from those litters...2 had serious health problems but are on the mend.

(34,107 posts)I don't have nearly as many as I used to but it has been picking up again as people dump their pets out in the country because we ALWAYS need more pets Poor, very frightened cats showing up. Some will make friends some not.
I feed and fix when I can. It is expensive and takes more time than I actually have right now but it saves them some grief I think so you just do it.
EDIT because I never really addressed what you wrote, what a dope!
Too bad about the babies that did not make it. It is very hard when they are sick right away. Takes it tole on you too. Keep your spirits up. I always mourn each one that I find, or see or can't help. Breaks your heart. Keep your heart open but safe if you can.

(56,177 posts)Not sure how rural you are...the ferals I take to the monthly clinic where I volunteer...all ferals and once a month they do it for free...you might check the nearest city and see what some places might offer!

(34,107 posts)but he is gone. I think the vet we use now would but it is not a lot. The only place I know that does do it is the Humane Society and it is a cost passed along to whoever adopts but I can't take a feral there because they would never get adopted and I would have to pay a lot to get them back so they did not eventually get euthanized. I will look around a bit more. Sadly the cats I feed never are around too long. We are rural enough to have a good population of coyotes and bobcat and fox and eagles and large hawks too and a train that runs a lot. I think they are lucky if they last a year around here.
If I can get them to eat in my barn and stay close to the barn they seem to have a better chance. I have not had a lot of luck catching them, it is always a skunk or raccoon I find in the trap.
