Thanks, packman. I will never be able to go there, but it is pure pleasure to "visit" with these pix.

It is absolutely the most spectacular place I've ever lived. The scenery, the people, the culture - amazing. I hope to go back, one day.

The naval base in Keflavik, in my case 1973-74. I even did some solitary hiking, a remarkable experience. I worked on the base newspaper and the American Forces Television station, for a while doing the only afternoon newscast in the country. (My ratings were low but I had a 100 share.)

I was lucky enough to be 'adopted' by some Icelandic civilian workers and they showed me the sights and took me in for the holidays. My father actually came up and stayed with me, for a week, which was a remarkable experience. I took him to Geyser and Gullfoss, and even wrangled a fishing license for him - unfortunately he didn't catch anything but he was thrilled just to try.

I was also lucky enough to be housed in what I think was the ONLY coed barracks in the entire Armed Forces. Right next to the Marine Barracks which gave us convenient access to the Marine Club, on the first floor. Movies, booze and Hofn-burgers.

The Friday Icelandic Cod fish fry is one of my best food memories.

(You pay your own hotel and other expenses, but they don't charge additional airfare.)

I did that on the way back from Scandinavia in 2011.

If I ever get the money, I will remember your post. Five days in another destination without additional costs, how cool is that?
