With modern SPFX available some Sci Fi movies could use a remake or reboot. Of course a decent scripts are needed. Bad remakes like War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still were a hot mess. Never the less here are a couple I would still like to see.
Fantastic Voyage
Westworld

While the SPFX were ground breaking for the time the cast and script were really good.

(63,210 posts)Better than the originals IMO.
There's really no winning on this issue; if a remake is bad, then there's a chorus of condemnation about the death of originality in Hollywood. But if it's a good remake, then there's always a stalwart band of diehard who insist that the original was better.

(50,983 posts)I just figured it could never be as good as the original. I'll have to rethink that.

(21,925 posts)suggest a modern remake of Metropolis. The themes in the film could certainly be fascinating in a modern remake, but it would have to be handled with great care and not just constitute a CGI festival. I would suggest a director with great narrative, story-telling skills and not a visual cartoonist. I'd stay away from directors who normally make special effects films or action films. Avoid Tarantino in favor of the subtlety of a Scorsese.

(21,925 posts)the supposed strong influence of Metropolis and Fritz Lang on Burton in his Batman films. I liked Burton's Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands but Johnny Depp had a lot to do with it.
Orrex
(63,210 posts)Even so, if they were to remake it, they should give it to an actual director, rather than Burton.
I agree about Scissorhands & Ed Wood. Burton is at his best when Depp is doing the heavy lifting.

(5,639 posts)There is no plot, no story, no remake, no anything I'd watch (even for free) if I were to learn that Tim Burton were involved in its production in any way. Hell, if he were just the coffee-and-donut runner for the cast and crew he'd find a way to fuck up the movie.

Done in the style of The Matrix or Dark City. I thought making it a comedy was a mistake.

(2,243 posts)Actually i wish that was never made. Peeps bagged on Alien 3, but I
thought the criticism was mostly unjust. I liked it more than Aliens with all its over the top macho
crap.
I thought Logans Run was supposed to be re-made.

(24,368 posts)Bruce Dern. A movie way ahead of its time.
Oh yeah...and "Outland" - Sean Connery.
Remade with todays effects would be awesome.
Aristus
(66,349 posts)didn't seem to do it any harm. It was perfectly rendered for its time. I think advanced modern special effects would ruin a re-make. Unless they actually made an effort to create a well-written, thoughtful story. And how many film-makers want to do that these days? Explosions, more explosions, and showy, balletic renditions of android technology. That's what we'll get instead of "Westworld, 21st Century."
BTW, "WW" was the first film to use pixelated computer graphics, to portray the robots' infrared vision.

Westworld and Futureworld were pretty freaky, too. I have a thing for 60s-70s sci fi.

The recent SW trilogy had magnificent effects. Not a person on the planet prefers them to the first trilogy.
There are thousands of SF novels that have never been adapted. I would rather see something new than retreading films that are mostly fine as they are.
That said, I would like to see a proper version Zelazny's Damnation Alley as the film version had very little to do with what Zelazny wrote. They changed a biker named Hell Tanner into an officer in the air force who launched nukes on Russia.

I also would like to see more films based on completely original SciFi/Fantasy scripts.

(38,311 posts)I've read thousands of Science Fiction stories that would make excellent films. Yet it also makes me crazy when Hollywood barfs on a story I've enjoyed; this makes me a tough customer.
Original scripts would be awesome too. I'd also like to see more plausible science fiction, where the story works mostly within the known physics of this universe and it's not all just magic.

Dune as at least 3 films and NO Sting in leather knickers.

(50,557 posts)Certainly every movie reviewer pointed out the cannibalism aspects of the movie. But what I really wanted to see, and I think you did too, is what the people did after they found out what Soylent Green really is. And this is where Sam Jackson, a very good action star, comes in. I think he'd be great in the role of the cop who leads the people against their dark overlords.
