I've lost ten pounds in a month since I stopped drinking beer, and I'm actually eating more.

I didn't think I drank enough to have that big of an effect on my body, but evidently I did.

My wife also feels a lot better about this. She sleeps a lot better now that she doesn't have to deal with my beer farts.

Beer is nothing but a big ton of useless calories. You might as well just velcro the bottles or cans to your butt or your gut.

Not to mention alcohol doesn't tend to make people terribly pleasant to be around. As a non-drinking person all my life drinkers have no idea how asinine and/or annoying they are after only a couple of drinks.

And kissing someone with beer breath? UGH!

Nothing wrong with enjoying a beer every once in awhile, but the people around you and your bathroom scale will thank you for giving it up.

Personally, beer in particular is the one alcoholic drink I could never understand how people could bear to drink it. It stinks like hell and tastes worse. Blech!

I've never liked liquor or wine, but I developed a taste for beer when I was a teenager.

or something similar such as it's an acquired taste. I just can't understand how one willing drinks something gross until they decide it isn't gross anymore. I'd be stopping at the first gross taste of anything. Which is probably why I've never been a drinker. Don't like the taste of any of it, but beer is by far the worst to me.

Kind of odd for a bartender, I know.

Getting a feel for what a few beers can do to your state of mind also helps in acquiring a taste for it. Even though alcohol is all the same no matter the drink, different types of drinks produce a little different kind of buzz. That is, until you get shit-faced. Then it's all the same.

I switched to light beer for a short time and then I gave it up entirely.

Recently I was sick enough to be in the hospital. The doctors told me my kidney infection would have killed me if I hadn't done something about it. One of the things that happened because of it was that I quit drinking altogether. It's been over a month and the very thought of drinking makes my skin crawl and shiver. I've also lost weight and I'm sure hoping that now that I'm not sick anymore I can lose more weight.

Keep it up!

A new study published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that drinking may help you live longer! Don’t get too excited. It seems that only moderate drinking has this effect, so you can’t just start chugging grain alcohol to become immortal. Yeah, we were disappointed, too.

Still, a healthy regimen of 1 to 3 drinks per day being proven not only safe but potentially beneficial to health is pretty good news. A dedicated team lead by Charles Holahan, a University of Texas psychologist, observed over 1,000 participants (aged 55 to 65) in their study over a 20 year period, and found that while 60% of heavy drinkers and 69% of non-drinkers died during that period, only 41% of the moderate drinkers did.

However, even after adjusting for all covariates, abstainers and heavy drinkers continued to show increased mortality risks of 51 per cent and 45 per cent, respectively, compared to moderate drinkers.

Even after taking account of traditional and non-traditional covariates, moderate alcohol consumption continued to show a beneficial effect in predicting mortality risk.
