The Slow, Watery Death of Light Beer in America

It’s no secret that big industrial beers like Budweiser are in terminal decline in the U.S. thanks to the growing sophistication of American drinkers. So perhaps it was inevitable that light beers from the same monolithic brewers might suffer the same fate sooner or later. It turns out to be sooner than one might think.

Here’s a statistic that will hearten beer snobs and unnerve high-ranking people at Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI:BB) and MillerCoors. Domestic light beer sales in the U.S. will hit a 10-year low in 2015, according to a report in Shanken News Daily. Light beer sales fell by 3.5 percent, to 98.4 million barrels, in 2013, and the e-mail newsletter projects that sales will decline by an additional 4.9 million barrels by 2015.

The biggest losers in the report are the obvious suspects. AB InBev’s Bud Light, the sector’s dominant force, suffered its fifth straight down year, according to the newsletter, dropping by 3.1 percent, to 37.6 million barrels. Coors Light lost 1.5 percent of its sales, and Miller Lite had an even worse year as sales dwindled by 5.9 percent.

“We’ve seen shifts in the marketplace over the past decade, yet we’re well-positioned to respond to consumer trends,” said David Almeida, vice president of sales at Anheuser-Busch. He pointed to innovation in the Bud Light brand, including such new drinks as the Bud Light Lime Straw-Ber-Rita, as well as “significant marketing support and a new creative campaign” to help bolster the company’s signature light beer.

Beer isn't beer unless it's craft beer.

They'll simply buy the market back. If that means buying up craft breweries, that's what they'll do. If it means buying distribution rights to imports, that's what they'll do. If it means premiering new offerings more like the new industry leaders, that's what they'll do.

Never bet against Anheuser-Busch. You'll never win.

I don't think I'm responsible for the downturn of corporate pisswater single-handedly. But it's nice to know I'm helping contribute.

What's happening with beer in the US is simply what's gone on in Europe for hundreds of years. People purchase and consume their beer from local craftsmen and women who make limited amounts of beer using seasonal ingredients and unique recipes. Good beer is worth paying more for. And even if you drink simply to get drunk, you're much more likely to get that way with rich, well-brewed local products than with mass-market swill, which has been calibrated to appeal to the broadest, least-discriminating consumers.

Marketing marketing marketing. Stupid commercials during sports programming. Posturing. Never about the beer itself, taste-wise.

It'll never go away though. All too many people I know still like their beer light and watery; and will have nothing else.

It's more fun to hold your little finger in the air when drinking beer from a poncy stemmed glass!

I draw the line at funny beards and "beer-ticking" though.

But if it has 'Lite' or 'Light' or 'a-Rita' or 'Coors' or 'Bud' or 'InBev' on the bottle/can, I pass.

Cheap doesn't have to be ditch water.

and i feel confident in saying that since I've tried hundreds of them over many years

they all start to taste the same - they all have that hoppy taste

they all claim to be individual but all have that hoppy taste left in your mouth

I drink cheap light beers - and when I want to step it up I drink imports

It will be a sad say when bars only sell micro-brews(already been in a few) - there should always be an alternative for us "unsophisticated drinkers"

I read a story of someone that got to visit Miller brewing co. and sample some stuff they were working on. It was found that Miller Lite ( the worst beer ever IMO ) is actually made by watering down it's own special brewing formula. He was allowed to sample some pre-watered down version of it and he said it was really a very flavorful brew and wondered why it wasn't available to the public.

When Lite first came down the pike, an old man sneered that it was water, was for sissies (his word), that three "real" beers (full bodied) would get you drunk and savoring conversation over a three hour span. Well, his point was that the beer manufacturers WANTED to sell you 14 instead of 3.

Fine. And well meaning, clueless abstinarians ask why not drink liquor so as not to pack on pounds. Well, because 4 hours is a wonderful span, and liquor puts you away in 45 minutes.
