My Lady Puppeh Girl crossed the Rainbow Bridge today.

The vet said it was time. She was 12 years old, fat and arthritic, and breathing and walking were getting difficult for her. There was nothing left to do but let her go.

She took me on a last Walkie this morning. When we got back she wanted to lay in the sunshine for over an hour before taking me back into the house. While outside I gave her a good brushing. She really enjoyed it.

I'll miss her. I helped select her, and I helped raise her. I played with her and took her for walks all her life. We went to the park together. We swam together in the back yard pool. (Of course, her idea of swimming was to float into my arms and let me hold her in the water.)

Perhaps I'll find a rescue friend. There are so many of them out there.

I'll miss you, my sweet puppy- until we meet again.

One year old and full of trouble

Last year

Last winter. She loved to sit in the snow.

Even though it was a cool day and she kept her pajamas on, I think she just wanted to feel the sun on her one last time.

My heart goes out to you as I know how much this hurts. We are just lucky to have them and enjoy them as much as we can when we do.

I took her for walkies three times a day. Everywhere we went she could expect petting from the adults and hugs from the kids- they'd all surround her and just start in. She would sit down and accept it all. After all, it was her absolute right!

The entire neighborhood will be in mourning in a couple days. Bless their hearts.

Kipling

The Power of the Dog

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find - it's your own affair, -
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!),
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone - wherever it goes - for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear!

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent,
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve;
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long -
So why in - Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Grieve not,
nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me
as if I were beside you...
I loved you so --
'twas Heaven here with you.

Would it diminish me if I said I was okay with her passing?

I've done this a few times in the past- I've felt the sadness a few times, due to the varying circumstances. One puppy's passing was especially hard- my Blondie Girl died at my feet, suddenly and unexpectedly. I watched the life leave her eyes. It actually gave me a nervous breakdown that I didn't come back from for six months.

But for Lady, it was simply time. I didn't want to do it but I knew it had to be done, and the sadness is tempered with that knowledge. Either I'm getting old or I'm gaining a bit of wisdom from experience. Or both.

Again, my thanks- for myself, and for all those here who have gone through it. There's a special pain that goes along with the experience, and a special knowledge too. That knowledge comes from having been loved without hesitation, without restriction, and without ever diminishing. And hopefully we returned that love, and knew they felt it and appreciated it.

The way I appreciate all of you.

He had diabetes, and cardio myopathy.. His lungs were filled with fluid, and even with meds, his life would have been misery.. He purred for me one last time as I petted him, and his passing was peaceful.. We buried him a few feet away from "MommieCat".. She always loved washing him when he was a kitten.. Watvhing him struggle to breathe was way more painful than letting the vet take away his pain..

Your girl was a beauty and you were both lucky to have each other
