Scarlett Johansson kicks the Rock's butt this weekend (at the box office)

Lucy swamps Hercules at the box office.

Scarlett Johansson‘s “Lucy” pummeled “Hercules” and Dwayne Johnson in a box-office battle of the action heroes and sexes, taking in a muscular $44 million over the weekend.

The Rock’s “Hercules” did better than expected and wound up with $29 million, to beat out two-time reigning champ “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” which finished third with $16.4 million. And one of Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s final films, “A Most Wanted Man,” cracked the top ten in its limited debut.

I think eye candy would be a more apt description. At least in this movie, in my opinion, her acting chops were not what was put on display.

I'd be more impressed to see a female around Tom Cruise's age, let's say, carry a film.

but if you look at some of her earlier movies, she's a decent enough actor. She was great in Ghost World and The Man Who Wasn't There, and I'm pretty sure she was still a teenager for both of those.

It seems like with younger actors, the director has a lot more to do with their performance than people realize.

but, also sometimes, the younger ones aren't as self-conscious about their performances - they just go out and act.

I am generally more impressed when they can do it on stage - sustain a character in real time, than in a movie with all the edits and retakes and whatnot.

I could easily go see it again there is so much to take in and digest. There is so much that is not known about brain function and I love hypothetical what if scenarios that get you to think. I'll be buying it on Itunes when it becomes available.

...the film Lucy has been discredited right here on DU because according to the best minds of science, mankind is already using 100% of its collective brain.

All of the dysfunction you see is because of........Republicans. Yeh, that's it.

...there are a few people who are clearly using 'all they got' just to get through each day. They show up here regularly to cry the blues and wonder out loud why life is so difficult even when they are playing by the rules and giving 110%.

Life is a bummer.

I'll see this when it hits Blu-Ray.

Since she's now headlined a #1 movie, following her critically well-received performance in Under The Skin, it would be nice if Marvel would get its shit together and give her a good Black Widow solo film.

I am curious about a Black Widow film though.
Still, I don't know how I feel about it.

To me the Black Widow, everything she does beyond the Avengers is "Classified", and not for mere mortals to know.

Surely the "brain" can do this much.

maybe they measure brain activity with x-rays or MRIs or cat scans? I just know that 10% (or 12 or 15%) has been out there for a long time. I remember it from when I was a kid, and I'm in my late 40s.

Found it to be really really dumb - not engaging. Very little character development. Pointless scenes that went nowhere and random car chases for no particular reason.
