The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support Forumsthe fracture in my ankle turned out to be pretty small, but my gods it hurts
the doc is more concerned about the ligament staying in place, so she stuck me in a brace and told me to stick with the crutch (i jettisoned one of them because it's a damn hassle to have both my hands tied up). it's also now turning some lovely colors and i can't get comfortable enough to get a good night's sleep.
it does feel better than it did the first few days, but i'm still pretty uncomfortable.
thanks for all the good thoughts you guys have given me this week.

(24,146 posts)i am very much a 'do it self' person and get irritated when i can't. but this ankle has been wrecked so many times i need to be really careful about taking care of myself with this.
hope you're having a good day

(31,518 posts)place to another was quite a challenge. I figured out that I could drop things in a laundry basket, put one crutch in the basket and drag it from room to room. Transporting a cup of coffee was a tricky thing until I started putting it in a thermos. I didn't have to make so many trips to the coffee pot that way and didn't spill a drop.

(24,146 posts)the doc yesterday gave me some real painkillers, so that's taking the edge off a bit. i'm just trying to stay off it and i've got it propped up with an ice pack right now.
i am grateful that i'm still able to get myself around, albeit very slowly.

They don't like it when you can't sleep.

(24,146 posts)the walk-in clinics here don't give you real drugs, but i had to go in for a follow up yesterday and that's what i told the doc. it helped some but it's more a matter of there just not being a good way for me to rest it while i sleep.

Staying off it as much as possible makes healing that much faster, but what a pain, eh?

(34,136 posts)But you do have to use two hands to push it. Just before I screwed up my first knee I bought a cheap folding walker at a thrift shop - boy did that come in handy. Then my BIL got a fancy Rollator walker in a deal and sold it to me cheap. That was real handy when I was recovering from knee replacements. It has a seat and a basket so I could put large things on the seat and stuff that might spill in the basket.
Follow the recommendations for icing, wrapping and heating the ankle - that will help.
A good ice/cold pack is one you can make yourself - 1 part rubbing alcohol to 4 parts water double bagged in Ziplocks (pour into the first, seal up, then put the seal side in the bottom of the second one). I add a couple of drops of blue food coloring so I remember what they are. If you use cup measurements and put the 4 cups of mixture in one gallon bags, it is thin and flexible and you can wrap it around your ankle. It stays cold a long, long time, doesn't melt and drip. I made two packs since it takes a while for one to cool off when it gets to room temperature. When I freeze them, I try to put them flat so I end up with a nice cold wrap to go around joints.
I made some with the same amount of mixture and put into quart bags - those were handy when I was recovering from my carpal tunnel surgeries. I just rested my hand and wrist on them. But they didn't drape around the join the way the gallon ones did.

(15,805 posts)Sucks.
That said, I got to put my office chair to good use, rolled nicely room to room. And my friends, bless them, brought bags of frozen peas, frozen peas and carrots, and frozen succotash to use as ice packs; frozen peas worked best, and I've taken to keeping a bag in the freezer just in case.
They also brought lots of cribbage.
Sending good vibes for healing!

(34,582 posts)Last month I had this deal where I would be walking normally then, at random times, I would get a pain level of 8 or 9 in my ankle and I would almost fall. I just had a small bone chip that hit a ligament every once and a while and eventually wworked its way out. I couldn't imagine a fracture
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)it's from fracturing is eight or nine years ago. i have wrecked this ankle on more than a few occasions but this is the worst.
it's feeling a bit better today and i'm hoping to actually get a good night's sleep before monday.

(34,582 posts)lunatica
(53,410 posts)I took Cipro, an antibiotic for a urinary tract infection in my kidneys and bone marrow when I landed in the hospital in May. What the drug company doesn't say is how dangerous this antibiotic really is. One of the dangerous side effects is it give you tondonitis in every tendon in your body and it can pop them, even after you stop taking it. It gets horribly painful, and one night I was rubbing my legs and feet and hands and arms trying to alleviate the pain but it wasn't working. I decided to put some regular everyday body lotion like Aveeno and Jergens on the painful parts and it actually took away almost all the pain. I was able to sleep. I could feel it working right away.
Try it since it won't do you any harm anyway. I told a co-worker about it who has problems with the nerves in one of her legs and it worked for her, so now I know it works on tendons and on nerves. Who knows. It might works for the pain of ligaments and broken bones too.
